Operation Kalanemi in Uttarakhand: Illegal Bangladeshis and Islamists posing as fake sants exposed by Dhami government

Uttarakhand’s Operation Kalanemi has exposed a dangerous network of fake sants, including Islamist infiltrators and a Bangladeshi national, exploiting Sanatan Dharma under the guise of saffron

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has cracked open a sinister network of fake sadhus some of whom are Islamist infiltrators, including a Bangladeshi national posing as Hindu sants to deceive, exploit, and subvert devotees. The crackdown, codenamed “Operation Kalanemi”, marks a historic moment in India’s war against religious impersonation, cross-border infiltration, and ideological sabotage.

In just 48 hours, Uttarakhand Police detained 57 imposters, with Dehradun and Haridwar becoming the epicentres of what is increasingly being seen as not just a law enforcement mission, but a cultural and civilisational battle.

Among those caught was Shah Alam alias Rukn Rakam, a Bangladeshi national who had entered Uttarakhand and was masquerading as a sadhu. He carried a Bangladeshi identification card and was actively involved in collecting alms and deceiving Kanwar pilgrims in Dehradun. Police say he was part of a broader network of individuals exploiting the religious fervour of the Kanwar Yatra to not only extort but possibly gather intelligence and spread discord.

“This is no longer about criminal fraud alone. It is spiritual espionage. It is psychological warfare in saffron disguise,” said a top police officer involved in the interrogation of the arrested individuals.

The arrest of Alam has triggered alarm bells at the state and central intelligence levels, with agencies now probing whether the operation has exposed a sleeper network of Islamist elements using Hindu religious routes as cover for subversive objectives. Even more startling is the revelation that six of the arrested individuals were Islamists, who had adopted Hindu identities, worn saffron robes, applied tilak, and taken shelter in temples, ashrams, and public spaces with Kanwar pilgrims.

“These men had no religious background, no spiritual purpose, and no local roots. What they had was a calculated strategy exploit faith, manipulate the innocent, and create a trust deficit in Hindu institutions,” said SSP Ajay Singh, who is personally supervising the crackdown.

Initial investigations reveal that these individuals targeted emotionally and financially vulnerable devotees, often women and minors, promising miracles, cures, and divine interventions—while engaging in extortion, mental manipulation, and in some cases, sexual harassment.

The operation’s codename, ‘Kalanemi’, is itself steeped in symbolism. In Hindu scriptures, Kalanemi was a Rakshasa sent by Ravana to obstruct Hanuman’s righteous mission. The name is no accident. It sends a clear message from the Dhami administration: this is a spiritual cleansing an ideological purge aimed at those who wear saffron not in devotion, but deception.

Swami Yatindranand Giri of the Juna Akhara, one of the most respected voices in the Hindu monastic order, did not mince words.

“These imposters are not accidental. This is part of a deliberate campaign by anti-Hindu forces to erode trust in our dharmic institutions. Some are criminals, others are ideological infiltrators. Many are both. They abuse the garb of saffron to destroy it from within.”

Giri has now called for a nationwide Aadhaar verification of all self-styled sadhus and babas, particularly in pilgrimage zones. His concern is echoed by Mahant Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, who warned of a spiritual collapse if such ideological intrusions go unchecked.

“The fabric of Sanatan Dharma is being pierced by those who hate it but have learnt to imitate it. This is not just fraud it is civilisational infiltration.” Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has received widespread praise from religious leaders and ordinary devotees for taking this bold and politically risky step. By confronting the rot within, the CM has proved that his government values Dharma over optics, justice over appeasement.

State BJP President Mahendra Bhatt further reinforced this position, “Criminals and infiltrators hiding behind saffron robes are enemies of faith. The law will treat them as such. The people of Bharat will not tolerate an ideological war on their temples and beliefs.”

He confirmed that ‘Operation Kalanemi’ will expand to Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, and could serve as a model for other BJP-ruled states to adopt in future.

Meanwhile, Yashveer Maharaj of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has launched a parallel civil society initiative to keep the Kanwar Yatra spiritually and culturally clean. At Har Ki Pauri, he distributed saffron flags and posters of Bhagwan Varah, urging shopkeepers and pilgrims to stay vigilant against imposters. “Islamists have understood that to break Sanatan Dharma, they must first imitate it, infiltrate it, then poison it from within. This must be stopped,” Yashveer declared.
