No link between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden deaths, say ICMR and NCDC studies

No Link Between COVID-19 Vaccines and Sudden Deaths, Say ICMR and NCDC Studies

Comprehensive investigations by national health agencies have found no direct link between COVID-19 vaccines and the reports of sudden unexplained deaths in India. Studies conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have reaffirmed that vaccines administered during the pandemic are safe and effective, with serious side effects being extremely rare.

The studies, aimed at addressing concerns around sudden cardiac deaths—particularly among young adults—highlight that such fatalities may result from a combination of genetic factors, lifestyle habits, underlying health conditions, and post-COVID complications, rather than vaccine side effects.

Two key studies were undertaken to examine the causes behind sudden unexplained deaths among individuals aged 18 to 45 years.

The first study, led by ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), was a multicentric matched case–control study titled “Factors associated with unexplained sudden deaths among adults aged 18–45 years in India.” Conducted between May and August 2023 across 47 tertiary hospitals in 19 states and Union Territories, the study analysed deaths of seemingly healthy individuals reported between October 2021 and March 2023. It concluded that COVID-19 vaccination did not increase the risk of sudden unexplained deaths in young adults.

The second study, currently ongoing, is a prospective investigation conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, in collaboration with and funded by ICMR. Titled “Establishing the cause in sudden unexplained deaths in young,” the study aims to pinpoint the common causes of such deaths. Preliminary findings indicate that myocardial infarction (heart attack) remains the leading cause of sudden deaths in this age group, with no significant change observed compared to previous years. In many cases, genetic mutations have emerged as a possible contributing factor.

Experts assert that the combination of retrospective and real-time research provides a more comprehensive picture. Both studies, taken together, underscore that COVID-19 vaccines do not contribute to sudden unexplained deaths, whereas factors like genetic predisposition, pre-existing medical conditions, and high-risk lifestyle choices play a more prominent role.

Scientific authorities have also warned against misinformation linking vaccines to sudden deaths. They stressed that such claims are not grounded in evidence, and could erode public trust in life-saving vaccines. Health experts have cautioned that unverified and speculative narratives risk fuelling vaccine hesitancy, ultimately threatening public health.
