As the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, India has begun a major evacuation operation for its citizens. With Israeli airspace closed, Indians in Tel Aviv are being evacuated through the Jordanian and Egyptian borders. The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv has issued an alert to the approximately 25,000 Indians in the country, urging them to remain vigilant. Meanwhile, Iranian attacks continue to target Tel Aviv, prompting urgent action. Two Indian students were recently injured in an attack in Tehran. India is moving swiftly to bring its citizens to safety amid growing insecurity.

Efforts are also underway to evacuate Indians from Iran. In the first phase, a group of 100 Indian nationals has crossed into Armenia. Many of them were medical students studying in Tehran. These students will be flown to India from Armenia, while arrangements are also being made for additional evacuations via the UAE. India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has spoken with the Armenian Foreign Minister to facilitate the evacuation process. Iran has agreed to allow Indian citizens, including 3,000 students, to leave the country through land borders with Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan due to the closure of Iranian airspace. The Indian Embassy in Iran had issued an advisory on June 15, asking citizens to avoid non-essential travel and remain in contact with the embassy. The embassy continues to coordinate closely with students to ensure their safety.

India’s evacuation efforts are unfolding amid signs of a rapidly worsening crisis in West Asia. The United States has issued orders for its citizens to evacuate Tehran, with President Donald Trump announcing the directive on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’. Trump declared that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons and warned of tough action. He is set to cut short his participation at the G-7 summit in Canada, returning a day early. Israel has also issued warnings to residents in northeast Tehran, indicating planned strikes on military facilities. Against this backdrop, Iran has responded positively to India’s request for a safe passage, allowing an alternative land-based evacuation of nearly 10,000 students from the country. India’s mission to repatriate its citizens comes as the region teeters on the brink of full-scale war.
