A British fighter jet made an emergency landing at the Thiruvananthapuram airport at 9:30 pm last night after it ran low on fuel. The aircraft, reportedly an F-35, was returning from a training flight and had taken off from a warship located about 100 nautical miles away. The pilot had attempted multiple landings on the mothership but was unable to do so due to rough sea conditions.
With fuel levels critically low, the pilot sought and received special permission for an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram airport, which is primarily a civilian facility where warplanes are not normally allowed to land.
Emergency arrangements were made at the airport for the landing. The fighter jet is currently parked at the domestic terminal, and both Air Force and Army officials have arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Refueling of the aircraft can only be carried out after receiving clearance from the Indian Army. Safety checks are also required before refueling can proceed.
The airport authorities have confirmed that the aircraft will be thoroughly inspected by officials. Due to the fighter jet’s arrival, the airport and its surrounding areas have been placed on high alert.
There is only one pilot on board the aircraft. As the pilot does not possess immigration clearance, he is currently unable to leave the airport premises. It has been communicated to him that he will be permitted to return after the plane is refueled. However, this process is expected to take some time.
