Indian Railway reforms tatkal booking system: OTP and Aadhaar authentication to be mandatory from July 1

In a major reform aimed at curbing misuse and ensuring fair access, Indian Railways has made Aadhaar authentication mandatory for Tatkal ticket bookings on IRCTC from July 1. Additional OTP verification and booking restrictions for agents will also be implemented to stop bot-based bulk bookings

In a significant overhaul aimed at streamlining the Tatkal ticket booking system and eliminating rampant misuse, Indian Railways has announced a series of reforms set to take effect from July 1. The most prominent change is the mandatory requirement of Aadhaar authentication for booking Tatkal tickets via IRCTC’s official website and mobile app.

As per the Railway Ministry, the new rules are aimed at strengthening user verification and putting a check on automated bot bookings that have long plagued the Tatkal system, disadvantaging genuine passengers. The ministry described the move as “a necessary step to enhance transparency and accountability.”

Mandatory OTP for PRS and Agent Bookings from July 15

Extending the Aadhaar-based verification framework to offline modes, the Railways has also mandated OTP-based authentication for Tatkal tickets booked at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters and through authorised agents. This rule will be enforced from July 15, and passengers will receive an OTP on the mobile number provided at the time of booking.

“This dual authentication mechanism using Aadhaar and OTP will ensure that bookings are genuine and made by real users. It will help curb the misuse of the Tatkal facility by touts and unauthorised agents,” the ministry said in a statement.

30-Minute Booking Ban for Agents

To address the issue of bulk bookings during the critical opening window, Indian Railways has imposed new time restrictions on authorised agents. From July 1, agents will not be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the reservation window opening.

AC class Tatkal bookings: Agents barred from 10:00 am to 10:30 am
Non-AC class Tatkal bookings: Agents barred from 11:00 am to 11:30 am

According to railway data, over 60 per cent of AC class Tatkal tickets are snapped up online within the first 10 minutes of availability, while nearly 84 per cent of non-AC Tatkal tickets are sold within the first hour.

“These restrictions are intended to level the playing field and ensure that the Tatkal scheme truly serves its purpose—helping genuine travellers in urgent need of railway tickets,” said a senior Railway Board official.

Ongoing Crackdown on Bots and Fake IDs

The latest reforms come in the wake of a major crackdown on the use of software bots and suspicious accounts. According to a News18 report last week, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has deactivated at least 2.5 crore user IDs in the last six months as part of its efforts to weed out illegitimate bookings. Additionally, another 20 lakh accounts are currently under scrutiny.

IRCTC has also launched a special verification drive for all user accounts that are not Aadhaar-authenticated. Those found to be operating suspiciously will face suspension or closure.

Balancing Access with Accountability

With these sweeping changes, Indian Railways is striving to strike a balance between accessibility and accountability in Tatkal ticket bookings. The Tatkal scheme, introduced to facilitate last-minute travel plans, had over the years become synonymous with opacity, manipulative software tools, and blocked access for ordinary travellers.

Railway officials say that the integration of Aadhaar-based verification and time-bound access for agents will help restore faith in the system.

“The goal is simple—to ensure that the benefits of Tatkal tickets reach those who genuinely need them, not those who game the system,” the ministry reiterated.
