From Dreams of Kashmir to Fear of POJK: How PM Modi rewrote India’s Kashmir doctrine

From conflict to confidence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed J&K into a model of integration and development. What was once Pakistan’s dream is now India’s decisive victory — with POJK in its crosshairs

From the burning streets of Srinagar to the record-breaking tourist surge in Gulmarg, from surgical strikes to seamless highway corridors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reshaped the J&K narrative like never before. What was once Pakistan’s dream of annexing J&K has turned into its worst nightmare — the fear of losing Pakistan-Occupied J&K (POJK). In just a decade, PM Modi has transformed Kashmir from a zone of conflict into a beacon of peace, progress, and national integration.

Demonetisation (2016): Crippling the Terror Economy

In November 2016, demonetisation targeted more than just black money. One of its covert goals was to destroy the ISI-backed counterfeit currency racket that funded terror in Kashmir. Overnight, fake Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes became worthless.

Impact:

Terror funding networks collapsed.
Stone pelting incidents dropped by 70 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016.
The ecosystem of street violence and unrest lost its financial fuel.

Surgical Strikes (2016) & Balakot Airstrike (2019): End of Strategic Restraint

In response to the Uri and Pulwama attacks, India launched unprecedented cross-border military operations.

Surgical Strikes (2016): Destroyed 7 launchpads, killed ~38 terrorists.
Balakot (2019): IAF bombed Jaish-e-Mohammed training camps deep inside Pakistan.

Impact:

India showcased a bold, proactive defence posture.
Pakistan was isolated diplomatically and stunned militarily.
A new military doctrine emerged: “Hit back harder.”

Article 370 Abrogation (2019): Constitutional Integration Complete

On August 5, 2019, the Modi-Shah duo abrogated Article 370 and 35A — ending J&K’s special status. The state was split into two Union Territories: J&K and Ladakh.

Immediate Reaction:

Zero large-scale unrest.
No significant international backlash.

Long-term Impact:

All Indian laws applicable in J&K.
Property and voting rights extended to all.
Panchayat elections recorded 74 per cent turnout in 2020.
Discrimination against non-residents eliminated.

Building the New Kashmir: Infrastructure Revolution

-5,000+ km of roads built under PMGSY (2019–2024).
-Chenab Rail Bridge: World’s highest railway arch.
-Zojila Tunnel: Longest tunnel in the Himalayas.
-Srinagar ring road, airport upgrades, and rural electrification.

Impact:

Connectivity transformed access to remote areas.
Surge in private investment and job opportunities.

Investment Surge & Tourism Boom

Rs 56,000+ crore worth of investment proposals received post-Article 370.
2 crore tourists visited J&K in 2023 – an all-time high.
Film crews returning after 30 years; hotel occupancy above 85 per cent.

Impact:

J&K is shifting from a conflict zone to a tourism and investment hotspot.
Revived local economy is empowering youth and entrepreneurs.

Economic Empowerment: Jobs, Startups & MSMEs

Unemployment dropped from 16 per cent (2016) to 6.1 per cent (2023).
7,000+ MSMEs registered post-2019.
Handloom exports surged 40 per cent in 2023.
IT Towers in Jammu and Srinagar under development.

Impact:

Youth prefer careers over conflict.
Economic incentives are defeating separatist propaganda.

Operation Sindoor (2025): A Decisive Blow

On April 22, 2025, Pakistan-sponsored terrorists attacked a tourist site in Pahalgam, killing 26 civilians. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor — a precise and devastating military strike that neutralised over 100 terrorists across POJK and Pakistan.

Aftermath:

PM Modi inaugurated the Vande Bharat Express and Chenab Bridge days after the operation.
Public support in the Valley surged — even opposition-ruled local governments praised the mission.

A Decade of Unprecedented Transformation

In just 10 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi achieved what successive governments couldn’t in seven decades:

Neutralised Pakistan’s proxy war machinery.
Integrated J&K politically, legally, and emotionally with India.
Restored hope and aspiration in the hearts of J&K’s youth.
Replaced fear with confidence, conflict with development.

In just a decade, PM Modi has redefined India’s Kashmir policy with clarity, courage, and conviction. Pakistan’s proxy war has been dismantled, and J&K now stands as a symbol of unity, growth, and national pride.
