Bengaluru: In connection with the stampede tragedy that occurred during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) victory celebration at Chinnaswamy Stadium, police have arrested several individuals on the direction of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. One of the key arrests is that of Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of RCB, who is now at the center of a legal battle.

Sosale’s wife, Malavika Naik, has filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court challenging his arrest, calling it illegal and unconstitutional. She has pleaded for an immediate stay on his detention.

In her petition, Malavika has cited the CM’s public statement made on June 5, arguing that Sosale’s arrest was carried out solely on the CM’s directive, without a proper investigation. She contended that this action violates her husband’s fundamental rights and disregards legal procedures. She also raised serious allegations against Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, claiming that he was directly involved in the stadium celebration.

Malavika’s petition states that free online passes were issued for the event and entry to Chinnaswamy Stadium was restricted to those with valid passes. The Deputy CM personally received players at the airport and attended a felicitation function along with the CM at Vidhana Soudha, before participating in the stadium event. The petition insists that once the mishap was known, the RCB team immediately called off the celebration, and thus no negligence can be attributed to the organizers.

Nikhil Sosale was arrested by Cubbon Park police today (June 6) at Bengaluru airport while he was preparing to board a flight to Mumbai. His arrest has drawn sharp reactions, with questions being raised about procedural fairness and political overreach.

Who is Nikhil Sosale?
Nikhil Sosale serves as the Head of Marketing and Revenue for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He is a senior executive at Diageo India, the company that owns United Spirits Limited (USL). A Bengaluru resident, Sosale has been associated with Diageo for over 13 years and has closely worked with the RCB franchise throughout his tenure.

This development comes amid mounting public criticism over the handling of the stampede incident, where 11 people lost their lives. The state government is facing increasing pressure from opposition parties and civil society over accountability and transparency in the investigation.

High Court defers hearing in Nikhil Sosale’s arrest case to June 9

The Karnataka High Court today heard the writ petition filed by Malavika Naik, wife of RCB Marketing Head Nikhil Sosale, challenging his arrest in connection with the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede incident. Senior advocate Sandesh Chouta appeared on behalf of Sosale and argued that the arrest was illegal and politically motivated.

During the hearing, Chouta told the court that Sosale was arrested unlawfully at 4:30 AM, without proper investigation. He pointed out that the police officer who filed the FIR was himself later suspended, raising serious concerns over procedural lapses.

HC questions legality of arrest
Justice of the High Court questioned Chouta: “How can you claim the arrest is illegal when an FIR had already been registered?”

In response, Chouta argued, “The arrest was carried out solely based on the Chief Minister’s press conference, where he publicly instructed for Sosale’s arrest. This political interference undermines due process.”

When the court asked for proof supporting this claim, Chouta submitted a newspaper report citing the CM’s press statement after a Cabinet meeting. He further emphasized that only the investigating officer has the legal authority to make an arrest, not a political figure like the CM.

After hearing the arguments, the High Court directed the petitioner’s counsel to submit more documentary evidence to support the claim of political interference. The hearing has now been adjourned to June 9 at 2:30 PM.

This case has added further intensity to the public debate surrounding the tragic stampede, which claimed 11 lives during RCB’s IPL celebration event. While Sosale’s arrest has triggered strong reactions, questions are also being raised about the role of state officials and procedural transparency in the police action.
