The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a strong advisory to media organisations, warning against intrusive and unethical coverage of senior Armed Forces personnel and their families in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. The directive, released through the Directorate of Public Relations, underscores growing concerns over aggressive media behaviour that has breached the private domain of national security leadership.
The MoD’s advisory comes amid an intense wave of public interest and media attention surrounding the top commanders of India’s tri-services following the unprecedented military operation conducted during the recent India-Pakistan conflict. While acknowledging the public’s right to be informed, the Ministry has drawn a firm red line on what it considers unwarranted invasion of privacy.

“It has come to the attention of the Ministry that this increased focus has extended beyond professional coverage into the personal lives of the officers and their families,” the advisory stated. “Media personnel have reportedly approached their residences, attempted to contact family members, and pursued personal coverage unrelated to their official duties.”
The advisory categorically prohibits media from attempting to engage with the families of both serving and retired defence personnel without formal clearance. It warns against the publication or broadcast of sensitive personal details such as residential addresses, photographs of family members, or any information not pertinent to operational roles.
“Refrain from visiting or attempting to contact the private residences or families of serving or retired Armed Forces personnel for personal stories or interviews, unless expressly invited or cleared through official channels,” the advisory reads.
The Ministry further reminded media houses and the public at large that while Armed Forces personnel may carry out public and national duties, their families remain private citizens and must be afforded basic respect, dignity, and protection from unsolicited media exposure.
This advisory reflects growing unease within the Armed Forces community regarding what many insiders are calling “media sensationalism” in the wake of Operation Sindoor—a covert and high-impact military campaign that resulted in a decisive strategic advantage for India. The public’s hunger for stories about the operation’s architects has, according to senior defence sources, led to disturbing levels of intrusion.
