Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently announced that Hamas’s Gaza chief and Islamist terrorist, Mohammed Sinwar, had been killed in an Israeli airstrike as part of the ongoing Operation Gideon’s Chariots. Sinwar, a senior terrorist figure, was the brother of former Hamas terrorist leader Yahya Sinwar, who was eliminated in an Israeli airstrike last October.

Born in 1975 in the Khan Younis refugee camp, Mohammed Sinwar rose through the ranks of the terrorist organisation Hamas, eventually leading the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades and assuming leadership of Hamas in Gaza following the death of his brother Yahya Sinwar in October 2024. Yahya had been a key figure in orchestrating the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks on Israel, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and escalated into the ongoing conflict.

It was reported that Mohammed Sinwar was seriously injured in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza on May 14. However, it was not possible to confirm whether he was dead or not. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that it had received accurate information that the terrorist Mohammed Sinwar was dead.

“We have eliminated Mohammed Sinwar. Ismail Haniya, Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar… now Mohammed Sinwar… we, Israel, have eliminated all of them,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Israeli parliament.

Mohammed Sinwar was the last remaining senior terrorist leader of Hamas in Gaza. He was hiding in a special underground facility. This underground base was equipped to control Hamas’s terrorist operations. The Israeli army destroyed the facility through a drone strike.

The terrorists had built this underground facility beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis. This Hamas terrorist command centre could be accessed through a specially constructed tunnel from underneath the hospital. The Israeli army has released a video of the demolition of this site. The tunnel and other scenes can be seen in the video released by the Israeli military.

Operation Gideon’s Chariots: A Strategic Offensive to Dismantle Hamas

In a decisive move to neutralize Hamas’s military capabilities and restore security, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched Operation Gideon’s Chariots on May 16, 2025. This comprehensive ground and air campaign targets Hamas’s infrastructure across the Gaza Strip, aiming to dismantle its operational strongholds and eliminate threats to Israeli civilians.

The operation has yielded significant results, with the IDF reporting the elimination of numerous Hamas militants and the destruction of key military sites. In northern Gaza, Israeli forces uncovered and demolished weapons caches and thwarted planned attacks, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb Hamas activities.

A notable aspect of the operation is the IDF’s commitment to safeguarding humanitarian corridors. Precise strikes were conducted on Hamas operatives who posed threats to aid deliveries, ensuring that humanitarian assistance reaches Gaza’s civilian population without interference.

In a significant operation, the IDF arrested over 240 suspected terrorists during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza. The operation targeted individuals posing as patients or using ambulances to escape, including key Hamas members involved in previous attacks.

Operation Gideon’s Chariots represents a strategic effort by Israel to dismantle Hamas’s military infrastructure and restore stability to the region. The IDF’s actions underscore its commitment to protecting Israeli citizens while minimizing harm to Gaza’s civilian population.

The elimination of Mohammed Sinwar, the last key Hamas terrorist leader in Gaza, marks a pivotal milestone in Operation Gideon’s Chariots. His death, alongside the systematic targeting of Hamas’s infrastructure and operatives, reflects the strategic success of the IDF’s campaign.
