Maharashtra: Islamist mob assaults, molests, and threatens Hindu women over complaint against illegal pan shop

In a disturbing instance of lawlessness and communal intimidation, a Hindu locality in Solapur’s Punjab Talim area was reportedly attacked by an Islamist mob, with Hindu women being specifically targeted. The violent assault has triggered widespread outrage and fear across the state.

According to media reports, the unrest stemmed from a dispute over an illegal paan shop run by local Muslims. Residents had earlier complained to authorities, alleging that the shop had turned into a hub for anti-social elements who routinely harassed pedestrians, particularly women.

Instead of solving things legally, people choose revenge. Eyewitnesses said that a large group of hundreds of angry people attacked a Hindu neighbourhood nearby. They broke into homes with sticks and swords. They hurt women, touched them improperly, and threatened to rape, kill, and burn down their homes.

Local people said that women were not only beaten but also had rude things done to them and were threatened with being burned alive. Cars were smashed, and stones were thrown at houses everywhere. What’s worse, many residents said the police either showed up late or clearly helped the attackers instead of the victims.

“This wasn’t mere violence—it was a calculated message,” said one visibly shaken resident. “Their aim was to spread fear, especially among Hindu women, through intimidation and sheer brutality.”

Despite the severity of the incident, it has yet to receive the mainstream media attention it warrants. However, social media is flooded with videos and firsthand accounts, many of which highlight blatant police inaction and the deliberate targeting of the Hindu community.

This is not an isolated incident. Across various parts of India, a disturbing pattern is emerging—where legitimate concerns raised by members of the Hindu community, especially against illegal or disruptive activities, are often met with communal provocation and violence.

The Solapur attack serves as a grim reminder of the dangerous consequences of appeasement politics, unchecked radicalism, and a failing law and order system. It echoes past tragedies, such as the 2022 murder of Umesh Kolhe, who was brutally killed in broad daylight—allegedly by Islamists—for expressing support for Nupur Sharma, the former BJP spokesperson targeted in the “Sar Tan Se Juda” protests for quoting Islamic scriptures.
