On May 21, Chhattisgarh Police’s District Reserve Guard has encountered Communist Party of India (Maoist) National General Secretary Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basavaraju who was the mastermind behind many of the deadly Maoist attacks in the country and the brain and chief conspirator behind the murder of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Karyakartha Vinod Kumar Jha.

The 1970s were a time when Maoists and radical organisations terrorised Andhra Pradesh and its border regions with deadly weapons and anarchy, shaking both rural areas and college campuses. ABVP Karyakarthas, being the torchbearers of nationalism were their primary target. Many karykarthas of ABVP were restricted the entry to college by the radical forces. Warangal (located in Telangana now) was a hot spot of these radical activities. Regional College of Engineering (REC) (Present NIT, Warangal) was one of the prominent academic institutions of the state. Students across the country used to join here for higher education. Vinod Kumar Jha was one among them who hails from Bihar, who joined in REC.

Witnessing the continuous attack on ABVP Karyakarthas and the hooliganism in campus by the radicals, he raised his voice against them. Vinod, a Swayamsevak and an ABVP Karyakartha who was an excellent student, a powerful orator, and a pioneer of nationalistic thought who discusses about the philosophies of Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa with his friends. Seeing Vinod’s leadership quality and his voice against the radical forces, the Maoist extremists who are filled with resentment, killed him on July 8, 1979. The first Balidani of ABVP in united Andhra Pradesh — Vinod Kumar Jha. The brain and chief conspirator behind his murder was Basavaraju. In his entire life he had never been arrested except for 1979, for the murder of Vinod and later he was released on conditional bail. Now, the justice has been served for Vinod Kumar Jha with the killing of Basavaraju by the armed forces of Bharat.

He was also the mastermind behind Alipiri Bomb blast of 2003, where an assassination attempt carried out against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Dantewada Massacre in 2010, where 76 CRPF Personnels were killed. Jeeram Ghati Ambush in 2013 where more than 25 lives have lost which includes Congress Ministers. In 2018, he took charge as the National General Secretary of CPI (Maoist). Today our armed forces have encountered him along with other 27 dreaded Maoists in the Karegutta Hills of Chhattisgarh as part of Operation Kagar. Earlier Union Minster of Home Affairs Shri. Amit Shah ji has said that “The Modi government is resolved to eliminate Naxalism before the 31st of March 2026.”
