Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, during a grand event in Varanasi on April 10, expressed deep gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi for transforming the ancient city of Kashi over the past 11 years. In the presence of the Prime Minister, who was visiting his parliamentary constituency for the first time after the grand Mahakumbh, CM Yogi highlighted the sweeping changes Kashi has undergone under Modi’s leadership, describing the city’s new form as a symbol of India’s cultural resurgence and modern development.

While inaugurating and laying foundation stones for projects worth nearly Rs 4,000 crore, CM Yogi stated that Kashi, once known for its narrow lanes and traffic chaos, has now emerged as a model of urban transformation, drawing visitors from all over the country to witness its remarkable makeover.

“This is the same Kashi that once struggled with narrow lanes and constant traffic snarls. Today, under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi, Kashi has redefined its identity through development in education, healthcare, tourism, and connectivity,” said CM Yogi.

Rs 50,000 Crore Worth of Projects in a Decade

Over the last 11 years, Varanasi has seen projects worth over Rs 50,000 crore come to fruition, significantly boosting infrastructure and public services in the region. CM Yogi underlined how Kashi, traditionally a spiritual and educational hub, has now evolved into a city that balances heritage with progress. From revamped roads and improved sanitation to world-class healthcare and educational institutions, Kashi is experiencing an unprecedented developmental surge.

The Chief Minister specifically credited Prime Minister Modi’s visionary approach for bringing large-scale investments and a focused developmental agenda to the city. “The people of India are witnessing how a sacred city like Kashi can be rejuvenated without losing its spiritual core,” he stated.

On this occasion, CM Yogi welcomed PM Modi with a ceremonial stole depicting scenes from Radha-Krishna’s divine pastimes. As a token of cultural pride and heritage, he also presented the Prime Minister with a handcrafted lotus-shaped umbrella made from the famed GI-tagged woodcraft of Varanasi.

The presence of prominent dignitaries, including Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, Gujarat Legislative Assembly Speaker Shankarbhai Chaudhary, and BJP State President Bhupendra Singh, added to the significance of the occasion.

Reflecting on the recently concluded Mahakumbh, CM Yogi emphasized the scale and sanctity of the event. The 45-day spiritual congregation saw over 3 crore devotees visiting Kashi to offer prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath temple and take holy dips in the Triveni Sangam. CM Yogi attributed the success of the Mahakumbh to Prime Minister Modi’s Namami Gange initiative, highlighting how enhanced water quality and upgraded civic facilities drew millions of devotees to the event.

“People from across the globe arrived to experience the divine energy of the Mahakumbh and the renewed vibrancy of Kashi. This was made possible by the Prime Minister’s emphasis on cleanliness, safety, and spiritual tourism,” CM Yogi noted.

In a significant move towards promoting local artisans, 21 new GI (Geographical Indication) tags were awarded to traditional products from Uttar Pradesh, many of which are crafted in Kashi and surrounding districts. CM Yogi celebrated this development, stating that Uttar Pradesh now leads the country in the number of GI-tagged products, a testament to the Prime Minister’s commitment to ‘Vocal for Local’.

These efforts have provided global recognition to local craftsmanship, enabling artisans to find new markets and economic security. Kashi’s famed woodwork, textiles, and handloom products have now found pride of place in international exhibitions and trade platforms.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the transformative impact of the Ayushman Bharat scheme on people’s lives. Over 50 crore Indians, including more than 10 crore in Uttar Pradesh alone, have benefited from the government’s flagship health insurance initiative. In Kashi, over 50,000 elderly citizens have enrolled for the Vay Vandana Yojana, receiving Rs 5 lakh health coverage, reflecting the scheme’s deep reach and popularity.

“PM Modi’s schemes are not limited to urban centers. They touch the lives of the poor, elderly, and rural populations. Ayushman Bharat is a milestone in accessible healthcare,” CM Yogi added.

In another key highlight, CM Yogi mentioned the Banas Dairy project in Kashi, which is playing a pivotal role in empowering farmers and cattle-rearers. By integrating them into the dairy supply chain, the project enables better earnings through value addition. On the day, PM Modi also distributed bonuses to dairy farmers associated with the unit, celebrating their role in rural development.

“The dairy model is a perfect example of cooperative success and rural entrepreneurship. Through such initiatives, our farmers are becoming self-reliant,” CM Yogi said.

The Chief Minister concluded by reiterating that Kashi’s growth story is a blueprint for developing other spiritual and cultural cities in India. By preserving its ancient soul while infusing it with modern infrastructure, Kashi sets an example of balanced development.

From the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor to the seamless connectivity improvements and enhanced urban amenities, the city now reflects a blend of heritage and futuristic planning. “Whether it is the upliftment of pilgrims, artisans, youth, or farmers – every sector has felt the positive change,” said CM Yogi.

The Prime Minister’s visit attracted a massive crowd of citizens and devotees, reflecting a shared feeling of pride in Kashi’s remarkable transformation. The city’s revival showcases how visionary leadership and a strong sense of purpose can reshape a historic place into a symbol of national pride.
