Calling out the West Bengal government’s alleged inaction during the Murshidabad unrest, BJP MP and state president Sukanta Majumdar on April 12 accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of deliberately “threatening Hindus” and attempting to “create a Bangladesh” through her appeasement of radical Islamist groups. The violence, sparked by protests against the Waqf Bill, has exposed what Majumdar called the complete breakdown of law enforcement under Mamata’s leadership. “Police are standing by silently, acting on her instructions,” he said, adding that vote-bank politics has paralyzed the administration. According to him, this has emboldened Islamist mobs while silencing Hindu communities. “We are in constant touch with Delhi, and the Union Home Minister is closely tracking the developments,” Majumdar stated.
“The police are doing nothing and are keeping quiet in Mamata Banerjee’s directions. She is trying to create a Bangladesh here by threatening Hindus, but Hindus have always fought, and it will continue that. We are in contact with Delhi, and the (Union) Home Minister is aware of everything,” Majumdar, the junior minister for education, told ANI.
When asked about the situation in violence-hit districts, including Murshidabad, Majumdar alleged that the situation was “grave” and the houses were being “looted”. He said that intervention from the union government would be required in the future, given the escalations.
“The situation is grave. Hindu women are being abused, and houses are being looted. Police are staying silent. Yesterday, Amit Shah took information (regarding what is happening). The intervention from central government would be required to handle the situation, given the way it is escalating,” he told reporters.
Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari vehemently condemned the recent violence in Murshidabad District over the Waqf Act, particularly the vandalism at the Jalangi BDO Office. He attributed the violence to “radical elements” opposing the Constitution and law of the land, alleging that these groups are spreading chaos to assert dominance and sow fear among other communities.
Taking to social media X, Adhikari said that the protest was a ‘premeditated act of violence’ and an ‘assault on democracy and governance’ by the Jihadist forces.
“I am deeply outraged and vehemently condemn the atrocious incident of vandalism at the Jalangi BDO Office in Murshidabad District, carried out by radical elements masquerading as protestors against the Anti-Waqf Law.”
“Let it be known that this was not an act of protest, rather a premeditated act of violence, an assault on Democracy and Governance by Jihadist forces who seek to spread chaos in order to assert their dominance and sow fear amongst other Communities of our Society,” he added. Adhikari highlighted the destruction of public property and compromised public safety due to unchecked mob actions.
“Public property was destroyed, Government Officials felt threatened, and an atmosphere of fear and intimidation was created, all under the false guise of dissent,” the post read.
Further taking a jibe at the CM Mamata Banerjee, the BJP leader criticised the West Bengal Government for their silence and inaction, questioning whether vote-bank politics is prioritised over the safety of West Bengal’s people and institutions.
“The silence of the Mamata Banerjee Government is deafening. Why is she allowing, instigating and tolerating such lawlessness? Why isn’t there any clear statement issued by the State Government condemning this act of terror? Is vote-bank politics more important than the safety of West Bengal’s People and Institutions?” added Adhikari. He demanded that the culprits be identified, arrested, and prosecuted under strict laws to restore order.
West Bengal Police announced on April 12 that the situation in the Suti and Samserganj areas of Jangipur, Murshidabad district, is now under control.
An unruly mob, which had turned violent during demonstrations opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Act, was dispersed through effective police action.
Taking to X, West Bengal police posted, “The situation in Suti and Samserganj areas of Jangipur is now under control. The unruly mob has been dispersed by effective police action. Traffic has returned to normalcy on the national highway. Strict action will be taken against those who have resorted to violence. Raids are being conducted to arrest the troublemakers.
