Suryakant Bali, a scholar of Indian culture and Sanskrit language, taught at Delhi University before becoming the Assistant Editor (1987) of India’s famous Hindi daily newspaper ‘Navbharat Times’. After being the local editor of Navbharat (1994-97), he was the Executive Editor of Zee News. Apart from prolific political writings, his writings on Indian culture were especially appreciated. For a long time, ‘Bharat Ke Mile Patthar’ (Ravivarta, Navbharat Times) was the most favourite column of the readers, which reached the readers in the form of a book called ‘Bharatgatha’ with considerable additions and changes.

Born on November 9, 1943 in Multan (now Pakistan), Bali always feels proud of the fact that his own cultured family as well as his College of Delhi University and its Principal Professor Shanti Narayan played a decisive role in shaping his values. He completed his BA Honours (English), MA (Sanskrit) from the same Hansraj College and then PhD in Sanskrit Linguistics from Delhi University. After that, he associated himself with study, teaching and writing. Apart from two books on political writings- ‘Mahaprashna of India’s politics’ and ‘Bharat ke Vyakti Ki Pehchaan’, Bali ji has published three books on Indian archaeology- ‘Contribution of Bhattoji Dikshit to Sanskrit Grammar (Ph.D. Thisis)’, ‘Historical and Critical Studies in the Atharvaved (Ed)’ and Mahabharata-centric book ‘Mahabharat: Punarpaath’. Shri Bali presented Vedic narrative forms for the first time in Hindi in the form of two novels- ‘Tum Kab Aaoge Shyava’ and ‘Dirghatama’. Thoughtful books ‘Bharat ko samjhane ki Sharanten’ and ‘Mahabharat ka Dharmasankat’ started a new chapter of discussion.
