The University of Hyderabad (HCU) has strongly refuted recent media reports regarding a supposed land survey conducted on its campus. Issuing a press statement issued on March 31, the university clarified that no survey was carried out by revenue authorities in July 2024 to demarcate the 400 acres of land that the State Government had resumed in 2006 from M/s IMG Academies Bharata Pvt. Ltd.
The university administration has dismissed claims made by the Telangana Government Housing Corporation (TGIHC) that HCU had agreed to such demarcation, stating that no official communication regarding this matter has been received. The university emphasized that the only action taken so far has been a preliminary inspection of the land’s topography, and no concrete steps toward demarcation have been initiated.
As HCU marks its Golden Jubilee year, it has been actively appealing to the State Government for the alienation of its land. The administration has reiterated its commitment to forwarding stakeholder representations to the government, urging a reconsideration of the issue. Additionally, the university has stressed the importance of conserving the environment and biodiversity in the region, aligning with its long-standing stance on sustainable campus development.
The institution also underscored that any transfer of land allocated to HCU must receive formal approval from its Executive Council, which consists of six nominees appointed by the President of India in the capacity of the university’s Visitor.
Raising concerns over the spread of misinformation, the university urged media outlets and stakeholders to exercise caution in disseminating unverified claims. The unchecked circulation of false information, without consultation with university authorities, has led to confusion and misrepresentation of facts, a recurring issue that the administration seeks to address.
HCU reaffirmed its stand on the matter and expressed its intent to continue engaging with the State Government to protect its interests while ensuring the preservation of the ecological balance of the campus.
BJP Telangana President G. Kishan Reddy strongly condemned the state government’s actions, accusing the Congress-led administration of suppressing dissent and destroying Hyderabad’s ecological balance for financial gain. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:

Clashes at University of Hyderabad Over Land Redevelopment

The protest intensified when bulldozers arrived on-site, prompting students to climb onto the machinery and raise slogans against the government’s move.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Telangana accused the police of excessive force, alleging that students were dragged by their hair and beaten, including female protesters.

Police detained 53 students, claiming they obstructed government work and even assaulted officers. They were later released, but authorities warned of legal action against those involved. The university’s student unions condemned the crackdown, calling it a violation of their right to peaceful protest and criticizing the administration for its inaction.

Despite the protests, excavation work at Kancha Gachibowli continued through the night, raising concerns among students and faculty about environmental damage and loss of green spaces. The BJP has also targeted Congress over its stance on the issue, accusing it of hypocrisy.
