Patna: In a historic moment, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s (ABVP) candidate Maithily Mrinalini has been elected as the president of the Patna University Students’ Union (PUSU), marking the first ever election of a female candidate on the presidential post in over 100-years-old history of the university.

The polls for the student union’s elections were held on Saturday with vote counting exercise stretching till late Saturday night.

In the result announced, ABVP’s Maithily Mrinalini emerged victorious by defeating her rival candidate from National Student Union of India (NSUI) Manoranjan Kumar. This comes despite one of the candidates in the fray, withdrawing its nomination in favour of Kumar.

Two of the independent candidates Saloni Raj and Dhiraj Kumar also secured their win on the post of General Secretary and Vice President respectively while the treasurer post was won by NSUI candidate Saumya Shrivastava. The ABVP’s candidates before the election had announced to work for the 5 P models if elected.

“My priority will be to ensure better facilities for boys and girls in libraries and labs besides promoting an environment conductive to academic excellence, said Mrinalini while asserting that her election to the post is a victory of democracy over money and muscle power.

Taking to the X, the student body (ABVP) expressed gratitude to the students of the university on election of Mrinalini on the presidential post.

“The Vidyarthi Parishad expresses its gratitude to all the students for reposing faith in the presidential post again after 13 years,” said the Union.

“This is a proud moment as for the first time in the 108-year history of Patna University Students Union elections; a female student candidate Maithily Mrinalini has registered a win. The victory not only reaffirms the youth’s faith in the ideology of ‘Nation First’ but is also a strong message against divisive and opportunistic politics on campus,” reads the post further.
