Patna: Bihar police in a joint operation with Special Task Force (STF) nabbed a wanted Naxalite (Maoist) Ramiqbal Mochi alias Madhir Das alias Aliman, police said on March 26. He was arrested from Masaudhi police station limits.
The accused was named in over 20 cases, pending against him in separate police stations of Arwal, Nawada, Jahanabad and Patna district of Bihar and Latehar district of Jahrkhand.
Das was reportedly involved in an encounter with the police that had taken place under the jurisdiction of Rajauli police station limits of Nawada district in the year 2019. He was also said to be involved in an arson incident in Patna district in the same year.
His arrest comes a day after the STF in another joint operation with the police arrested 8 members of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a splinter group of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) from Aurangabad district.
The arrested accused were all involved in extorting or demanding levy money on the name of the Maoist outfit. They were said to be active in separate districts of Jharkhand. The joint team also recovered a country-made rifle, 303 rifles, live cartridges, uniforms and other materials from the possession of the accused.
Sharp decline in Maoist insurgency in Bihar
Notably the state has registered a sharp dip in Maoist related incidents in recent years, reflecting the success achieved by the security forces and police in eliminating Maoist insurgency from the state.
According to the latest statistics released by the Union Government, the state witnessed only two Maoist-related incidents in the year 2024, highlighting a sharp decline.
The figure suggests that the state had registered only 17 Maoist-related incidents between 2022 to 2024 as compare to the 85 incidents that it witnessed between 2019 to 2021.
This comes after the police along with the security forces paced up their operations against Naxalites in the state, nabbing over 120 members of the banned group in 2024.
Further, a total of 11 security camps have been erected in the state as part of the government’s effort to dominate the areas earlier infested by extremists. The persistent effort of the government has succeeded in reducing the spread of insurgency which is now believed to be confine to a few southern districts only.
