Tamil Nadu: Opposition alleges ‘murder state’ status under DMK rule

In Erode, John was killed in front of his wife. In Nellai, a retired SI was hacked to death. Murders, robberies, and sexual assaults have become the order of the day. I have never seen such anarchy in Tamil Nadu’s history

The main opposition AIADMK and BJP have termed the series of murders in the state as an indicator of worsening law and order, stating that Tamil Nadu has become a “murder state.”

Netizen Nellai Selvin, in a post, says: “The people of the state have never witnessed a worse law and order situation in their lives.”

After the TASMAC scam came to light following ED raids, BJP leaders announced protests against the DMK government. However, before the protests could take place, the government detained thousands of BJP leaders, including women and state president Annamalai, holding them beyond 6 PM without producing them before a magistrate, as mandated by law. These actions led to a heated exchange of words between DMK and BJP leaders.

AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, in a post on X, stated that murders have become a daily occurrence and that the Dravidian Model government has failed to prevent them. He listed multiple killings that took place on 19th March alone:

Near Madurai, police constable Malaiarasan’s half-burnt body was found.

Near Coimbatore, a woman teacher’s body was discovered in a charred condition.

Near Erode, a rowdy was hacked to death in public view.

Near Sivaganga, soothsayer Kodanki Santhan was hacked to death.

Within 24 hours, nearly 11 POCSO cases were registered.

He stated that it has now come to the point where the government must release a “daily murder report” instead of a status report, calling it the “greatest achievement” of Stalin’s DMK government.

Daily Status Report கொடுப்பது போல, Daily Murder Report கொடுக்க வைத்துள்ளது தான் @mkstalin மாடல் திமுக அரசின் ஆகப்பெரும் சாதனை.

Even before the bloodstains of retired Sub-Inspector Zakhir Hussein Bijili (64), who fought against the encroachment of Waqf properties, had dried in Tirunelveli, police on 19th March shot and arrested key accused Krishnamurthy alias Thoufiq after he whipped out a sickle and attacked officers during his arrest. The government suspended Assistant Commissioners of Police Senthil Kumar and Inspector Gopalakrishnan for negligence in taking action. The slain SI had named certain police officials who were allegedly complicit with the assailants.

In Madurai, BJP district functionary Karuppaswamy, reported missing for over two days, was found dead in a car under mysterious circumstances. The police have recovered the body and are investigating.

A 35-year-old rowdy, John, from Salem, was hacked to death in his car by a gang of four on the Salem-Coimbatore National Highway near Nasiyanur, Erode district, on 19th March—in full public view. John, who had several criminal complaints against him, had just presented himself at Annadanapatti police station. When returning home with his wife, a four-member gang intercepted his car and stabbed him to death in front of her. His wife, Saranya, also suffered injuries. The police later intercepted the assailants’ vehicle and arrested three suspects: Saravanan (38), Bhoopalan (36), and Sathish (30), while the fourth, Karthi (30), remains at large.

A 67-year-old Kumar, who uncovered an attempt to usurp his relative’s property (worth several crores) on the East Coast Road (ECR), was abducted and strangled to death in a moving car by land grabbers. Kumar, a retired Greater Chennai Corporation employee, was a DMK Labour Wing (LPF) functionary.

Political commentator Sumanth Raman wrote:  “Law and order is becoming a significant problem in TN. One more murder, this time of a DMK Labour Union functionary.”

BJP leader H. Raja slammed the HR & CE and the DMK government, stating that devotees were dying in temples due to the inefficient and callous attitude of the authorities. He listed a series of deaths:

16th March: Om Kumar (Sivaganga district) collapsed at Thiruchendur Subramania Swamy temple.

17th March: Rajdhoss (Rajasthan native) died at Rameswaram temple.

18th March: Sundaramurthy (Erode district) collapsed at Thanjavur Big Temple.

19th March: Selvamani, a BJP functionary, died due to breathlessness at Palani temple.

H. Raja accused HR & CE Minister P.K. Sekar of being unfit for the post, stating that funds meant for temple welfare were instead being used to promote DMK leaders and their luxurious lifestyles.

BJP state president K. Annamalai questioned whether law and order even exists in Tamil Nadu anymore, stating:  “In Erode, John was killed in front of his wife. In Nellai, a retired SI was hacked to death. Murders, robberies, and sexual assaults have become the order of the day. I have never seen such anarchy in Tamil Nadu’s history.”

In another post, he lamented: “How many more lives are we going to sacrifice? The DMK government is inefficient.”

He further accused the state police of being more active in arresting government critics than performing their actual duty of maintaining law and order.
