Tamil Nadu – Once a glowing state but now a ghost state under DMK

Under the present rulers, it is a ghost state, with the daemons of the ruling DMK fast destroying the societal fabric of the state itself. For them, plundering the state by all means of corruption and plunging the state into unfathomable abyss is the only mantra. The sooner DMK is uprooted from the political map of TN, the better it augurs for the state

Ever since DMK assumed power in 2021, one of their greatest achievements lie in turning Tamilnadu into a safe haven for all kinds of anti national and anti social elements. The nexus of the ruling party, particularly the top brass is so brazen that the criminals and the extremists are shielded and the common man is compelled to be mute lest he become the target of the persecution by the law enforcement agencies. There is a general perception in TN that the rule of the DMK always is a free pass to criminals and dastardly acts like sexual assaults on women, murders, narcotics, smuggling etc become so intense that the public begin to treat it as a norm even.

This time too DMK has lived up to this dubious reputation, in fact enhancing this ghastly perception of this regime. We will analyse the present scenario in TN, on three broader aspects – Sexual Assaults on Women, Growing Terrorism and Drug menace that is spreading like wildfire growing unabated.

A. Sexual Assaults on Women

For the ruling DMK as a party, sexual crimes on women has been a long term practice. None can forget the gory image of the late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Madam J Jayalalitha, coming out from the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Hall, after being subjected to physical assault right in the well of the house by the then DMK MLAs under the watchful eyes of their supremo. The legacy has further been expanded by the present CM Mr. M.K.Stalin. A recap of the most recent incidents in the past two months reveal the bloody picture the women endure in Tamil Nadu.

1. Anna University Assault: In mid-January 2025, A 19-year-old student’s rape right in the campus of the Anna University Guindy campus by Gnanasekaran—a knife-wielding vendor—exposed institutional rot: non-working CCTV, a beaten friend left bloodied, and her assault recorded for blackmail. The leaked FIR and DMK’s defensive spin reveal a system more adept at damage control than prevention. Worser yet, the criminal culprit has enjoyed proximity with the ruling DMK’s top functionaries and unconfirmed reports say that he had been an history sheeter with the connivance of the ruling party’s top leaders.

2. Coimbatore Gang Rape: Seven men brutalized a 17-year-old girl—stripped, beaten with belts, and urinated on—after abducting her in Coimbatore. The savagery, ending with her dumped near a ditch, underscores a chilling youth crime surge, with opposition and the public pinning it on DMK’s alleged drug laxity.

3. Chennai Minor Assaults: Three minor girls in Chennai’s slums endured a night of rape by six, including juveniles, in a filthy ruin—clothes shredded, throats gripped, blood on concrete. Filmed and discarded, it’s a stark snapshot of unchecked predation and police blind spots.

4. Tiruppur Migrant Assault: A 27-year-old Odia woman was raped by three men in front of her bound husband and crying toddler, her wrists bleeding, stomach pummelled. This migrant family’s nightmare in a grimy room exposes Tamil Nadu’s underbelly of exploitation and impunity.

A comparative analysis of the data available with NCW show that between 2021 when DMK returned to power and 2024, cases pertaining to Women’s Safety rose 18–29% (from 8,501 to ~10,000–11,000). Undoubtedly Women Safety is fast deteriorating as a result of the careless rule of the DMK under the leadership of Mr.M.K.Stalin.

B. Rise in Terrorism and related activities

On October 23, 2022, near the Sangameswarar Temple in Kottaimedu, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu—a bustling area with historical sensitivity from the 1998 bombings., one Jamesha Mubin (29), a mechanical engineering diploma holder, drove a Maruti 800 loaded with explosives, including two LPG cylinders rigged with an improvised explosive device (IED), nails, and ball bearings. Around 4:20 AM, the vehicle exploded roughly 100 meters from the temple, instantly killing Mubin in what the NIA later confirmed as a suicide attack carried out in typical ISIS style. Mubin, a Coimbatore native, had been on the NIA’s radar since 2019 for radical links tied to an earlier ISIS module case in Tamil Nadu. His social media profile showed pledges to IS leaders Abu Al-Hasan Al-Hashimi Al-Qurashi, and his home later yielded bomb-making materials and jihadist propaganda. Under the DMK government (in power since May 2021), the Coimbatore City Police and Tamil Nadu DGP Sylendra Babu initially framed the explosion as an accidental mishap, prompting accusations of a cover-up from opposition BJP and media critics. Under whatsoever compulsions be, the then Commissioner of Police, Coimbatorer told media it was “not immediately clear” if it was a terror act, focusing on a mechanical failure theory despite the car’s incineration and scattered shrapnel—hallmarks of an IED. DMK resorted to its minority appeasement politics again, throwing national security to wind. One after the other, almost on a regular basis, DMK top leaders started giving interviews that downplayed this terrorist act itself.

The state police registered an FIR under IPC Section 174 (suspicious death) rather than invoking the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) immediately pointed out by BJP’s TN Head K. Annamalai who called “deliberate suppression.” Only on October 25, after arresting five associates (Mohammed Thoufiq, et al.), did police apply UAPA Section 18 (conspiracy for terrorism). Obviously DMK resorted to its traditional vote bank politics, fearing stricter actions could dent its prospects in the 2024 elections. Threat to National Security, uhh, why would they care!

NIA’s Role in Unearthing the Truth in the Coimbatore Blast Case (2022)

Once handed the case on October 26, 2022, the NIA swiftly dismantled the state’s “accident” narrative, exposing an ISIS-inspired terror plot through arrests, chargesheets, and ongoing probes up to February 2025. It has unearthed a complex network of IS inspired terrorists who were planning to wreck havoc in the county, and it is continually arresting all those conspirators-terrorists and their silent aides. The main chargesheet and the supplementary chargesheets filed by NIA throw open a gruesome plan by the ghastly IS Islamist terrorists spanning across neighbouring countries also to make a bloodshed in India through serial bomb blasts. The Islamic State of Khorasan Province claimed the slain terrorist Mubin as a “martyr” in Voice of Khurasan, validating NIA’s findings and exposing the Tamilnadu Government’s initial denial as untenable. This whole incident exposes the shielding of terrorists by the ruling DMK, placing its minority appeasement vote bank politics far above the National Security.

In sum, the police and DMK government initially framed the Coimbatore blast as an ordinary incident, possibly to manage communal and political fallout, but the shift to NIA oversight and subsequent revelations exposed its terror roots. Whether this was a calculated cover-up or a cautious misstep remains debated, rooted in Tamil Nadu’s complex socio-political terrain.

C. Growing Drug Culture across the State

The fast growth of Drug culture in Tamil Nadu, particularly targeting youth, is a growing concern. There are some startling aspects to this whole issue. Early in Jaffer Sadiq, a 36-year-old Tamil film producer and former DMK functionary, emerged as a central figure in a transnational drug trafficking operation uncovered by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). His network primarily dealt in pseudoephedrine, a precursor chemical used to manufacture methamphetamine—a highly addictive synthetic drug with a lucrative global market.

The NCB alleges Sadiq masterminded a syndicate that trafficked approximately 3,500 kilograms of pseudoephedrine over three years, valued at over Rs 2,000 crore ($240 million USD) in the international market. Pseudoephedrine fetches around Rs 1.5 crore per kilogram in countries like Australia and New Zealand due to high demand for methamphetamine. His network spanned India, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia, with consignments disguised as food-grade cargo (e.g., desiccated coconut powder, multigrain mixes) to evade detection. Over 45 shipments were reportedly dispatched between 2021 and 2024.Operations were rooted in Tamil Nadu, with a godown in West Delhi’s Basai Darapur raided on February 15, 2024, yielding 50 kilograms of pseudoephedrine and the arrest of three Tamil Nadu natives: Mukesh, Mujibur Rahman, and Ashok Kumar—all linked to Sadiq. Jaffer Sadiq has been arrested and subsequently expelled from the party, yet the shadows remain. The ED’s subsequent probe, including raids across different places uncovered over ₹40 crore in drug money funnelled into various sectors, with evidence of cash layering through intermediaries.

Perceived Connection to the DMK Family

Sadiq’s ties to the DMK, Tamil Nadu’s ruling party led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, have fuelled political controversy, with BJP alleging complicity or negligence by the DMK leadership. He has perceived connections to the “DMK first family”—namely Stalin, his son Udhayanidhi Stalin (Sports Minister), and daughter-in-law Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi. Sadiq served as the Deputy Organizer of the DMK’s NRI Wing in Chennai West, a mid-tier position that gave him visibility within the party. Social media posts (later deleted) showed him with Stalin, Udhayanidhi, and DGP Shankar Jiwal, including a December 2023 event where he donated Rs 12 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for Cyclone Michaung.

Notably Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai, highlight these interactions as evidence of Sadiq’s closeness to the DMK elite, suggesting his party role provided cover for illicit activities. Annamalai claimed Sadiq funded DMK events in Chennai, though no concrete financial trail to the leadership has been publicly substantiated. Sadiq’s criminal history—alleged drug ties dating back eight years—should have raised red flags in DMK much before the incident actually flared up, but it never did, indicating a complete laxity. Not only that, in 2021 he was elevated in the party, pointing to either negligence or complicit nexus.

Now comes the most crucial party, the use of Drug Money in Films by DMK First Family’s Daughter-in-Law. A key allegation is that Sadiq funneled drug profits into Tamil films, including those linked to Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi, wife of Udhayanidhi Stalin and daughter-in-law of M.K. Stalin. Kiruthiga, a director and producer, helmed the 2024 film Mangai, which the NCB and ED claim was “entirely funded” by Sadiq’s illicit earnings. The ED alleges Sadiq invested over Rs 40 crore in cash across film production, hospitality, and real estate. Specifically, Rs 12 crore was reportedly layered into JSM Pictures (his production firm) for movies, with Rs 6 crore in direct cash payments to actors and technicians.

Summing up, DMK has turned TN into a feeble relic of its glorious past, where it was heralded as a state with utmost safety for womenfolk, a state with ample growth opportunities across the spectrum, a state with its appetite for embracing modernity while upholding its basic culture. Under the present rulers, it is a ghost state, with the daemons of the ruling DMK fast destroying the societal fabric of the state itself. For them, plundering the state by all means of corruption and plunging the state into unfathomable abyss is the only mantra. The sooner DMK is uprooted from the political map of TN, the better it augurs for the state. There is a widespread perception among the common public of TN that it is their imperative duty to defeat DMK in the ensuing assembly elections in 2026, to ensure a safe, secure, growth oriented, prosperous TN for their posterity. Having sensed this, DMK is now resorting to diversionary tactics, creating an illusory image of a non existent Hindi imposition through NEP, and spreading the fear among the public that Hindi will engulf Tamil. The common public of TN are wise enough to see through this evil design and are waiting for the opportunity to dust the ruling monarchs through the democratic revolution in 2026.
