Kerala has witnessed a series of shocking drug-related incidents, exposing the growing menace of narcotics in the state. In one case, a large quantity of banned drugs was seized from a godown linked to a CPM member. In another, a father was found using his 10-year-old son as a drug carrier. Meanwhile, a suspected drug trafficker died after allegedly consuming MDMA in an attempt to evade arrest.
Drugs seizure at CPM man’s godown
The police in Kollam district are intensifying their crackdown on drug trafficking. On 9 March, authorities seized drugs worth Rs 23 lakh from a godown reportedly owned by Deepu, a CPM member. During the raid, 50 bags of banned drugs were found stored within a food company. Deepu managed to escape as the police gave chase, and efforts are underway to track him down.
Officials confirmed that the seized drugs had a market value of Rs 23 lakh. The investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the drugs and any potential links to a larger smuggling network.
Mohd Shameer used his 10-year-old son as a drug carrier
In a disturbing case from Tiruvilla, near Pathanamthitta, a father allegedly turned his 10-year-old son into a drug courier. The accused, Mohammed Shemeer, has been booked under the Child Rights Act based on a complaint filed by the child’s mother, who has been living separately for a long time.
According to police investigations, Shemeer had been under surveillance by the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (Dansaf) for the last six months. Reports suggest that he used his son to transport drugs by pasting small packets onto the boy’s body using sticky tape. The child, unaware of the true nature of the activity, was sent to deliver these packets to school, college, and professional college students.
Shemeer reportedly sourced the drugs from Karnataka and is suspected of storing a larger quantity elsewhere. He was arrested at his father’s house, where police recovered 3.78 grams of MDMA from him. The investigation is ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the operation.
Drug trafficker dies after consuming MDMA
A tragic incident was reported from Kozhikode on 8 March, where a suspected drug trafficker died after consuming a large quantity of MDMA. The deceased, Iyyadan Shanid (28), was arrested on 7 March while carrying two packets of MDMA. Upon seeing the police, he swallowed the packets and attempted to escape. However, he was caught, taken into custody, and admitted to hospital.
A CT scan and endoscopy confirmed that two packets containing white granules were inside his stomach. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to the effects of the drug the following day.
The police have stated that only a post-mortem examination can confirm whether his death was directly caused by MDMA ingestion. Further investigations are underway to trace the source of the drugs and any potential links to a larger trafficking network.
