Gaya: In a major setback for the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist), Vivek Yadav, the in-charge of the banned group’s South Bihar regional committee was found murdered near Gaibachhiya dam, said police on Wednesday, February 26.

Yadav’s body with bullet wounds to the head and back was recovered from a secluded place of Manjhauli hills under Dumariya police station limits of Gaya district on Tuesday.

According to the information received, the police after recovering Yadav’s body sent it to the hospital for autopsy and identification purpose and it was only on Tuesday evening that his family members identified him.

A resident of Kothi area of Gaya, Vivek Yadav was wanted in over three dozen cases (40) registered against him at various police stations of Bihar and neighboring Jharkhand. He was also said to be the zonal commander of the People’s Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA), the armed unit of the proscribed group.

Yadav was named in over two dozen cases pending at various police stations of South Bihar districts alone and a reward of Rs 13 lakh was already announced on him by the Bihar and Jharkhand police. He was said to be on the run since 2018.

He took charge of the South Bihar regional committee following murder of Sandeep Yadav, a former member of the politburo and in-charge of the Bihar-Jharkhand Special Area Committee in May 2022.

A seasoned Maoist cadre Sandeep Yadav was murdered due to infighting between the members of the banned group following arrest of top cadre and Central Committee member Vijay Kumar Arya in April 2022.

Notably, a year after the arrest of Arya the Bihar police in another significant operation arrested Pramod Mishra aka Sohan Da a key politburo member along with his accomplice Anil Yadav from the Tikari sub division of Gaya district in August 2023.

Mishra’s arrest revealed that he was working as the bureau chief of the Eastern Regional Bureau of CPI (Maoist) and was assigned with the task of reviving the Maoist group in Bihar and Jharkhand.

Earlier in January this year, a regional commander of the banned group was also nabbed in a swift operation launched by a joint team of Bihar police and Special Task Force (STF).

The arrested Maoist commander was identified as Rahul Yadav alias Vikas (53) who was nabbed from Rafiganj-Shivganj on January 11. The arrested accused was wanted in around two dozen cases.

Notably only a handful of districts adjoining the southern borders of the state stands partially affected by the Maoist insurgency at present, marking the significant progress made by the security forces and the police in the state once affected badly by the Maoist-insurgency.
