US President Donald Trump once again lavished praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their high-stakes meeting at the White House. With discussions spanning trade, defense, and energy cooperation, Trump’s resounding endorsements of PM Modi’s leadership sent a clear message about the evolving power dynamics between the two global giants.
Trump declares PM Modi the ‘Better Negotiator’ in trade talks
During their intense deliberations on trade tariffs and economic relations, Trump made a striking admission about Modi’s strategic prowess. “He (Prime Minister Modi) is a much tougher negotiator than me, and he is a much better negotiator than me. India-US energy and Defence ties
One of the key takeaways from the meeting was India’s expanding role in the US energy sector. Trump announced that India would be purchasing significant quantities of American oil and gas, emphasising the mutually beneficial nature of this deal. “We have more oil and gas than any other country in the world by far. They need it, and we have it,” Trump remarked, hinting at a long-term energy partnership.
On the defense front, both leaders discussed deepening military collaborations, reinforcing India’s position as a critical U.S. ally. As India continues to modernise its armed forces, the potential for defense technology transfers and strategic partnerships between the two nations is only set to grow. Trump stated the necessity for both nations to remain united in addressing global challenges. “More than anything else, we (PM Modi and I) have great unity, we have great friendship – he and I and our countries. I think it’s only going to get closer,” he said.
Not one to hold back, Trump also took the opportunity to lash out at the Biden administration, calling it a “terrible interruption” in US governance. “We had a great four years, and we were interrupted by a terrible administration. Terrible, they did not know what they were doing. Now, we are putting it back together,” he said, suggesting that his policies, including those related to India, were being reinstated.”
Trump said that PM Modi has been his “great friend” for a long time and stressed that it is a “great honour” to have him at the White House. He said that they will hold talks on oil, gas and trade. He also congratulated PM Modi on having done a great job.
Donald Trump said, “It’s a great honour to have PM Modi of India. He is a great friend of mine for a long time. We have had a wonderful relationship and we kept the relationship during our 4 year period…We have just started up again. We have, I think, some very big things to talk about. Number 1 is, they are going to be purchasing a lot of our oil and gas.”

But, it’s really an honour to see you, you have been my friend for a long time. Congratulations on having done a great job,” he added.
The Indian delegation including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and India’s Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra arrived at the White House soon after PM Modi’s arrival.
The Prime Minister is among the first few world leaders to visit the United States following President Trump’s inauguration. He has been invited to visit within three weeks of the new administration taking office.
Since November 2024, PM Modi and Trump have spoken on the phone twice. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended the inauguration ceremony of President Donald Trump as PM Modi’s Special Envoy. During the visit, EAM Jaishankar also met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and participated in the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ meeting in January 2025.
