US President Donald Trump once again lavished praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their high-stakes meeting at the White House. With discussions spanning trade, defense, and energy cooperation, Trump’s resounding endorsements of PM Modi’s leadership sent a clear message about the evolving power dynamics between the two global giants.
Trump declares PM Modi the ‘Better Negotiator’ in trade talks
During their intense deliberations on trade tariffs and economic relations, Trump made a striking admission about Modi’s strategic prowess. “He (Prime Minister Modi) is a much tougher negotiator than me, and he is a much better negotiator than me. There is not even a contest,” Trump conceded with a wry smile, acknowledging Modi’s diplomatic dexterity in securing advantageous trade deals.
This statement comes against the backdrop of longstanding friction over India-US trade policies, where Washington has often criticised New Delhi for imposing high tariffs on American imports. By admitting Modi’s superior negotiating skills, Trump not only elevated the Indian leader’s stature but also hinted at the challenges the U.S. faces in securing more favorable terms.
‘We missed you a lot’: Trump’s unusual warmth for PM Modi
As PM Modi arrived at the White House, Trump greeted him not just with a handshake but with a tight hug and an exclamatory remark: “We missed you a lot.” The phrase stated the deepening personal rapport between the two leaders, marking a continuity from their previous interactions, including the ‘Howdy, Modi!’ event in Houston.
In a world where leaders often engage in carefully measured diplomacy, Trump’s unfiltered enthusiasm for PM Modi signals a shift in how Indo-US relations are perceived. PM Modi reciprocated the warmth, calling Trump a “dear friend” and expressing eagerness to rebuild the momentum in bilateral relations.
Trump gifts PM Modi a ‘Special’ Photo book with a bold message
Demonstrating his penchant for grand gestures, Trump presented PM Modi with a personalised photo book chronicling their diplomatic engagements. The highlight of the gift was the bold statement written across the cover: “Mr. Prime Minister, You Are Great,” personally signed by Trump.
While seemingly a token of friendship, the move was significant in reinforcing PM Modi’s global stature. Given the current geopolitical climate where India is emerging as a crucial player on multiple fronts, Trump’s overt praise positions PM Modi as a key figure in shaping the new world order.
‘A Terrific Man’ leading India’s rise on the global stage
During the press conference, Trump heaped further praise on PM Modi, calling him “a terrific man” and emphasising his confidence in striking “wonderful trade deals” between India and the U.S.
Trump’s continued appreciation for PM Modi’s leadership comes at a time when India has been asserting itself more aggressively on the international stage, from defense collaborations to economic partnerships. By aligning himself with PM Modi, Trump effectively acknowledges India’s growing influence and its indispensable role in global affairs.
‘Our relationship is the best it’s ever been’
In an assertion that carries significant geopolitical weight, Trump declared, “I think our relationship is the best it’s ever been.” This statement reflects a notable shift from past U.S. administrations, which have often viewed India through a more transactional lens.
India-US energy and Defence ties
One of the key takeaways from the meeting was India’s expanding role in the US energy sector. Trump announced that India would be purchasing significant quantities of American oil and gas, emphasising the mutually beneficial nature of this deal. “We have more oil and gas than any other country in the world by far. They need it, and we have it,” Trump remarked, hinting at a long-term energy partnership.
On the defense front, both leaders discussed deepening military collaborations, reinforcing India’s position as a critical U.S. ally. As India continues to modernise its armed forces, the potential for defense technology transfers and strategic partnerships between the two nations is only set to grow. Trump stated the necessity for both nations to remain united in addressing global challenges. “More than anything else, we (PM Modi and I) have great unity, we have great friendship – he and I and our countries. I think it’s only going to get closer,” he said.
Not one to hold back, Trump also took the opportunity to lash out at the Biden administration, calling it a “terrible interruption” in US governance. “We had a great four years, and we were interrupted by a terrible administration. Terrible, they did not know what they were doing. Now, we are putting it back together,” he said, suggesting that his policies, including those related to India, were being reinstated.”
Trump said that PM Modi has been his “great friend” for a long time and stressed that it is a “great honour” to have him at the White House. He said that they will hold talks on oil, gas and trade. He also congratulated PM Modi on having done a great job.
Donald Trump said, “It’s a great honour to have PM Modi of India. He is a great friend of mine for a long time. We have had a wonderful relationship and we kept the relationship during our 4 year period…We have just started up again. We have, I think, some very big things to talk about. Number 1 is, they are going to be purchasing a lot of our oil and gas.”
“We have more oil and gas than any other country in the world by far. They need it, and we have it. We are going to talk about trade. We are going to talk about many things. But, it’s really an honour to see you, you have been my friend for a long time. Congratulations on having done a great job,” he added.
The Indian delegation including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and India’s Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra arrived at the White House soon after PM Modi’s arrival.
The Prime Minister is among the first few world leaders to visit the United States following President Trump’s inauguration. He has been invited to visit within three weeks of the new administration taking office.
Since November 2024, PM Modi and Trump have spoken on the phone twice. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended the inauguration ceremony of President Donald Trump as PM Modi’s Special Envoy. During the visit, EAM Jaishankar also met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and participated in the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ meeting in January 2025.
