Bengaluru: The biennial Aero India Show, which commenced at the Yelahanka Air Base, is set to become a defining moment for India’s aerospace and defence sector. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, while inaugurating the 15th edition of this global event, emphasised that Aero India goes beyond just showcasing buyer-seller relationships in the defence sector. It is, at its core, about transforming research, development, and manufacturing in line with India’s vision of becoming a self-reliant and technologically advanced global defence power.

Speaking to the media and attendees, Singh underlined that the defence show also works on a transactional level, highlighting the importance of collaboration across nations with a focus on research, development, and production. “The Aero India Show is not just about showcasing defence products; it is about fostering international partnerships and collaborations that drive mutual benefits,” he stated.

The 2025 edition of the Aero India Show promises to be monumental, featuring significant announcements and key partnerships in the aviation and military industries. The four-day event will showcase the capabilities of over 450 domestic and 50 foreign aircraft, cementing its role as a critical platform for demonstrating India’s prowess in both aerospace and defense technologies. The exhibition is also an important milestone in the growth of India’s aerospace and defense sector, which continues to evolve rapidly to meet the demands of modern defense strategies.

A Platform for Global Opportunities

The Defense Minister also praised the event for being a platform that not only exhibits India’s capabilities but also offers millions of opportunities for global stakeholders. He emphasized that India is committed to advancing technological innovation and strengthening its position in global defense manufacturing. “Aero India showcases the opportunities that India can offer to the world and reinforces our commitment to global peace and mutual benefit through strategic collaborations,” Singh added.

Aero India has been a key driver of India’s efforts to strengthen its international partnerships in defense, research, and production. As India seeks to increase its footprint in global defense markets, the event continues to facilitate crucial collaborations, furthering India’s vision of becoming a self-sufficient and technologically advanced nation.

India’s Push Towards Self-Reliance in Defense

In his address, Rajnath Singh also highlighted the significant increase in India’s defense budget, which has risen by 9.3 percent in the last 10 years, equating to an allocation of Rs 6.18 lakh crore in just a single year. A remarkable 80 percent of defense manufacturing in India is now done indigenously, a clear sign of India’s growing self-reliance in defense production. This development is in line with the country’s goal of enhancing domestic production capabilities while reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.

Singh noted that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has entered into a joint venture with Tata Advance Systems to develop 295 different defense components, further contributing to India’s strategic autonomy. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the defense sector is no longer viewed merely as an essential service but as a critical contributor to India’s economic growth and technological advancement.

Aero India as a Platform for International Partnerships

Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, also spoke at the event, emphasizing that Aero India is more than just an exhibition. “It is a platform for the growth of India’s air power and for fostering strong international partnerships,” he said. He took pride in Karnataka’s contributions to the aerospace sector, recalling that the state introduced its first aerospace policy in 2013. The establishment of a 1,000-acre aerospace park in Devanahalli further solidified the state’s position as a global hub for aerospace research and development.

“Bengaluru, with its world-class research centers, is playing a key role in India’s development as a leader in the aerospace sector,” Shivakumar added.

Aero India 2025: A Technological Powerhouse

In a unique comparison, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh likened the significance of Aero India 2025 to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. He described the aerospace exhibition as a “technological powerhouse” for aviation and defense, drawing a parallel between the gathering of millions of people at the religious event and the convergence of global defense buyers and sellers at Aero India. “Aero India 2025 is not just a display of military might; it is a reflection of India’s resilience and strength in a world that is increasingly marked by uncertainty,” Singh stated.

With more than 450 Indian and over 50 international aircraft on display, Aero India 2025 is set to further solidify India’s standing as a global leader in aerospace and defense technology. The event continues to serve as a key milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing, international collaboration, and technological innovation.

As the Aero India Show unfolds over the next few days, the world will be watching closely, with India’s defense sector poised to make a significant mark on the global stage.
