NHRC Steps in and Files Complaint
Meanwhile, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also stepped in and asked YouTube to remove the video with his inappropriate comments.
In its letter to YouTube, NHRC said that it had received a complaint from Yogendra Singh Thakur, who alleged that the YouTube show hosted by comedian Samay Raina contained “highly objectionable, inappropriate, and obscene remarks about Indian society.”
The letter further added, “The commission has come across certain links indicating that a certain episode of the aforementioned show features YouTubers making vulgar and explicit statements concerning women and children. The availability of such content on widely accessible platforms, including YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, poses a grave threat to the safety, dignity and the mental well-being of children, including women.”
Social Media Backlash and Criticism
The incident has ignited a debate on social media, with many users criticising Allahbadia and questioning the state of digital content in India. Among the voices of dissent was journalist and lyricist Neelesh Misra, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his concern over the impact of such content.
“This content is not designated as adult content — it can be seen with ease even by a child if the algorithm takes him or her there. The creators or the platform have zero sense of responsibility,” Misra wrote.
He further held the audience accountable for normalising such content, stating: “You, the audience, normalised and celebrated this and people like these. Decency is not incentivised in India — by platforms or audiences — and creators are stooping lower and lower for audience reach and revenue. These creators can say anything in the name of freedom of speech and get away with it.”
Ranveer Allahbadia Responds to Backlash
Amid the controversy, Ranveer Allahbadia has issued an apology for his remarks, acknowledging his mistake.
“I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s Got Latent. I’m sorry,” he wrote in a statement.
About ‘India’s Got Latent’
India’s Got Latent is an unscripted comedy show hosted by Samay Raina, inspired by the American YouTube show Kill Tony. The controversial episode featured popular digital personalities such as Ashish Chanchlani, Apoorva Mukhija (The Rebel Kid), and Jaspreet Singh, along with Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia.
Despite Allahbadia’s apology, the controversy surrounding the episode has raised concerns over the ethical responsibility of digital creators and the platforms that host them.
