Karnataka Congress in Turmoil: Infighting over CM’s position and resignation of Advisor BR Patil

Karnataka Congress is embroiled in intense infighting over the Chief Minister's position, with multiple factions backing different contenders, including Satish Jarkiholi and DK Shivakumar. Amid this power struggle, the resignation of CM's advisor BR Patil highlights internal discontent over insufficient funding for key constituencies, intensifying the political instability

The Karnataka Congress party faces increasingly intense infighting, reminiscent of a charred cinder block that once stood tall and is now in disarray. The race for the Chief Minister title has sparked fervent cries from supporters, pushing their preferred candidates into the limelight. As the intrigue unfolds, the buzz surrounding potential contenders has even travelled to the Kumbh Mela, where a dedicated supporter publicly declared that PWD minister  Satish Jarkiholi should ascend to the role of Chief Minister.

The ongoing tussle over power sharing within the Karnataka Congress has set the stage for a high-stakes game of political manoeuvring. With various factions rolling their dice, the stakes are mounting. Magadi MLA Balakrishna’s remarks that DK Shivakumar should “take the helm of the state” ignited a flurry of discussions in Congress, marking a new chapter in the already heated rivalry.

Whenever discussions arise regarding DK Shivakumar’s potential elevation to the Chief Minister’s position, opposing factions quickly respond with their suggestions, among which Jarkiholi’s name stands as a prominent contender. The proposition of a Dalit CM has also gained traction, with voices rallying behind this cause.

This narrative reached the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, where a fervent supporter publicly vowed allegiance to Satish Jarkiholi’s candidacy. The atmosphere was charged as the crowd echoed the “next CM” sentiment, further intensifying the competition among Congress leaders.

Strategic Moves from Dalit Leaders

Amidst these power struggles, Dalit leaders within the party are actively strategising how to counterbalance the ambitions of DK Shivakumar’s faction. Minister KN Rajanna has taken a proactive stance by addressing the need for representation of smaller communities in appointing members for the four vacant councils.

As Balakrishna’s comments stirred discussions, Minister MC Sudhakar clarified that while Balakrishna endorsed DK Shivakumar as a suitable CM, he did not specify a timeline for this transition. Senior Minister HK Patil also weighed in, emphasising that the final decision rests with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Monastic Voices Join the Fray

It’s not just the politicians engaging in this dialogue; prominent monastery heads have also chimed in regarding the next Chief Minister. Earlier, Chandrashekarnath Swamiji of Vokkaliga Math expressed his support for DK Shivakumar, while Prasannanandpuri Swamiji of Valmiki Peeth advocated for Satish Jarkiholi. In a twist, Siddarameshwara Sri from the Bhovi Samaj endorsed HK Patil as a promising candidate, but Patil maintained a cautious stance, opting for silence on the matter.

Amid these discussions, current Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is reportedly taking a step back due to health concerns, specifically knee pain, leading him to cancel all scheduled programs. This situation has prompted DCM DK Shivakumar to take on the responsibilities of all meetings and events in Siddaramaiah’s stead, demonstrating his active engagement in the party’s affairs.

The Karnataka Congress party is facing a tumultuous time, with the recent resignation of the Chief Minister’s advisor adding to the party’s woes. Simultaneously, the SC and ST ministers have departed for Delhi to meet with the high command while the clamour for the next Chief Minister continues unabated in the party’s headquarters. Despite high command warnings, the speculation surrounding DK Shivakumar’s elevation to the top post refuses to subside.

The Congress camp has been abuzz with discussions about the next Chief Minister, a topic that has become increasingly dominant in state politics. In a recent development, MLA H.C. Balakrishna hinted at DK Shivakumar’s suitability for the position, sparking renewed debate within the party.

MLA H.C. Balakrishna’s Remarks at the Thanksgiving Meeting

At a thanksgiving meeting held in Channapatna, MLA H.C. Balakrishna praised CP Yogeshwar, who was welcomed for his contributions to the constituency. In his address, Balakrishna lauded CP Yogeshwar, saying he is akin to a new MLA who understands the needs of the Channapatna constituency. Balakrishna added that CP Yogeshwar is not just a ceremonial figure, but an active participant who knows the constituency’s problems.

DCM D.K. Shivakumar, who was instrumental in organising the meeting in the absence of CM Siddaramaiah, took the stage to thank the people of Channapatna for their support. Shivakumar acknowledged the importance of CM Siddaramaiah’s visit, but his absence was due to mandi-related issues. The DCM praised the people of Channapatna for voting for development work and securing his victory in the elections.

A Plea for Unity: Join Hands with the Congress

To foster unity within the party, Shivakumar urged JDS workers not to waste their time. He stated that the Bangalore South district is gearing up for the next phase and encouraged them to consider an alliance with the Congress. Shivakumar assured the JDS workers that CM Siddaramaiah would stand by them, emphasising the importance of unity and cooperation.

In his statement made during a press briefing in Kalaburagi, CM’s former political advisor raised eyebrows and ignited discussions regarding ongoing issues in allocating funds to his constituency, Alanda. Patil’s resignation is not just a personal decision but a reflection of deeper frustrations within Congress regarding funding from key guarantee schemes.

The Context of BR Patil’s Resignation

Speaking candidly, BR Patil expressed that his resignation was not a “special development” and remarked that he felt it was an inevitable step he should have taken sooner. His disappointment primarily stems from his constituency’s lack of financial support, with guarantee schemes failing to deliver the anticipated funds. Despite these frustrations, Patil maintained that he was not unhappy, indicating that he had communicated his concerns directly to CM Siddaramaiah in a letter.

“I have written a letter to CM Siddaramaiah for the second time, expressing my concerns over the inadequate funding,” Patil stated. He noted that the Chief Minister, currently under pressure due to a case involving the  Mysuru Urban Development  Authority   (MUDA), assured him of ongoing support: “He has said that he will remain your friend till the end.”

Discontent Over Funding for the Alanda constituency

Patil’s resignation has thus far been attributed to his dissatisfaction with the budgetary allocations for the Alanda constituency. Despite not being awarded a ministerial position, Patil anticipated that increased funding would be allocated to his constituency. However, the outcome of the last budget did not meet his expectations, as no special package was provided for Alanda.

Political analysts speculate that Patil’s resignation could be a strategic move to garner attention for his constituency’s plight. Some sources suggest that the resignation exerts pressure on the state government in anticipation of a more favourable financial arrangement in the forthcoming budget.
