In a disturbing turn of events, the Thiru-vi-ka Nagar all-women police team apprehended six individuals, including three minors, accused of sexually assaulting three girls aged under 17. The arrested individuals include Kalimullaha alias Ali (21), Syed Mohammed Jaffer (22), Abishek Antony (19), and three juveniles, all of whom reportedly have previous criminal records. This case comes to light shortly after the Tamil Nadu government introduced two significant bills aimed at enhancing protection for women in response to persistent sexual crimes in the state.
The incident began when a 32-year-old woman filed a missing person report with local police after her 12-year-old daughter failed to return home after telling her parents she was attending a friend’s function. Concerned for their daughter’s safety, the girl’s parents lodged a complaint. Utilising mobile tower signals, the police tracked one of the girls’ phones and located them in an abandoned library building in Venus Nagar. Reports indicate that the girls were initially taken to various locations, including Avadi and Ambattur, before being brought to the library.

According to police statements, the group of boys lured the girls to a park in Perambur, where they consumed alcohol, allegedly forcing the minors to drink as well. While it remains unclear if all six suspects assaulted the girls, investigations suggest that some of the accused raped the minors while others stood guard outside the library. Following the rescue operation, the traumatized girls were taken to a government home for medical examinations before being returned to their families.

The alarming behaviour of the perpetrators is highlighted by the fact that Abishek, an ITI first-year student, and Kalimullaha, who has faced 11 criminal cases, were among those involved in this latest incident. The alarming trend has incited criticism from political leaders, including AIADMK general secretary Edapadi K Palaniswami, who lambasted the current DMK government for its inability to curb escalating crimes against women. He emphasized the need for stringent legal measures to deter would-be offenders.
