The Mahakumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, was captured in stunning images from the International Space Station (ISS) on January 26. Astronaut Don Pettit shared the remarkable photos on the social media platform X, offering a celestial view of the event. The images showcase the illuminated banks of the Ganga, reflecting the vibrant energy of this grand religious event.

The breathtaking photographs capture the radiant lights and vast gathering of devotees, highlighting the sheer scale of Mahakumbh, which continues to awe people worldwide. As the world’s largest human gathering, the Mahakumbh Mela draws millions of devotees who come to immerse themselves in the sacred waters of the Ganga to attain spiritual solace.

More than 13 crore devotees have participated in this spiritual experience at the Sangam. The stunning space visuals have brought global attention to the 2025 Maha Kumbh, which is expected to draw even more visitors.

Don Pettit, an American astronaut and chemical engineer known for his innovative contributions to space exploration and astrophotography, captured the images. Having spent an impressive 555 days aboard the ISS, Pettit is also the inventor of the “Zero-G Cup,” the first patented object created in space. At 69, he is NASA’s oldest active astronaut.

Pettit remarked on the incredible view of the Mahakumbh Mela from space, noting the radiant brilliance of the world’s largest human gathering along the Ganga’s banks.
