Imphal: Continuing its effort against illegal immigrants, the Manipur government on January 5th deported 26 Myanmar intruders.

The deportation of 26 Myanmar citizens to their homeland took place on 5th January after they crossed the porous border into India through Manipur.

Taking microblogging site X, CM N Biren Singh wrote, “The Manipur government reiterates its dedication to helping individuals escaping conflict by providing them with humanitarian aid and making sure they live in dignity. The government, however, is adamantly opposed to permitting unauthorized migrants to remain in Manipur.” It is the first deportation drive by the Manipur government in 2025. In 2024 about 800 intruders were sent back to Myanmar by the state government.

Meanwhile sensational reports have come from the trouble-hit state.

Militant organizations in the war-torn Indian state of Manipur are allegedly circumventing government-imposed internet shutdowns by using Elon Musk’s satellite-based internet service, Starlink. Although Starlink, run by Musk’s SpaceX, is not authorized for usage in India because of security concerns, it is allowed in neighboring Myanmar. According to various media reports, armed group members and security officials have attested to the service’s use in the area. According to a senior police officer who wished to remain anonymous, a Starlink gadget was probably brought into Manipur illegally from Myanmar, where the service is permitted by law. There have been reports of Starlink being operational in regions close to the Myanmar border, the officer continued.

Meanwhile, to combat state unrest, Ajay Bhalla, the newly appointed governor of Manipur, proposes using the NSA against miscreants. According to sources, Ajay Bhalla made a significant decision within 24 hours of becoming governor of Manipur: he proposed that the state police use the National Security Act, or NSA, to combat criminals and troublemakers who have been causing unrest in the state and holding Manipur hostage for more than a year.
