Tamil Nadu: Police arrests 4 in connection with rape and murder of woman in Ramanathapuram

Four men were arrested in Ramanathapuram in connection with the gang rape and murder of a woman, highlighting the growing concern over women's safety in Tamil Nadu. The incident, similar to the Chennai Anna University rape case, underscores the state's deteriorating law and order situation

Akin to the Chennai Anna University rape incident, in Ramanathapuram, four men intercepted a woman and gang raped her. It is evidence that Tamil Nadu is not safe for children, students and women and the worsening law and order.

According to reports, on December 31, 2024, police arrested four men for allegedly threatening and sexually assaulting a young woman near Ramanathapuram. When the young woman was travelling with a male friend of hers to the Puthanendal area, the gang, allegedly under the influence of liquor, intercepted her. After assaulting both the woman and her male friend, they sexually harassed the woman during the incident.

The victim filed a complaint with the Ramanathapuram Town police station. Based on the plant, police have arrested suspects from Puthanendal —identified as Bhuvanesh Kumar, Saran, Selva Kumar kutty, Murugan and Muneesh Kannan.

Police arrested a 34 years old Kumeresan on charges of raping and murdering a widow near Chinna Salem in Kallakurichi district a few days ago. 28-year-old Nirmala, who lost her husband to electrocution four years ago, was living with her two young daughters. On December 26, 2024, she visited her home with her children, and later that night, she left home to deliver milk to the cooperative society. The next day, a neighbour found her dupatta, mobile phone, and chappals scattered in a nearby sugarcane field. Police investigation revealed that the woman had been raped and murdered.

Kumaresan, who spotted the woman passing the forest area where he was consuming liquor, dragged her to the forest, raped and strangulated her.

In another shocking incident, a 22-year-old woman has been arrested for eloping with a class 9th student for the second time. Police arrested both the woman and her friend. Police said 14-year-old boy studying in a private school at Ashok Nagar befriended his tuition master’s sister, and they became close. Police traced them in Puducherry following a missing boy complaint on December 16 from his parents. They withdraw the complaint. On December 31, again, the boy was missing. Based on his mother’s complaint, police traced them again in Puducherry with the woman and her friend Rahul(21). They are remanded to judicial custody.

In Dharmpuri, the driver of a van on charges of sexually harassing 3 minor girls was arrested following complaints from their parents. Athiaman Kottai police said the accused, Perumal, was earlier arrested in connection with a sexual assault of a woman a year ago.

A 57-year-old train passenger, Sundravel, was arrested for sexually harassing a girl travelling in the same train. On December 30 night, he boarded Uzhavan Express from Thanjavur to Chennai Egmore. When the train crossed Sirkazhi, he misbehaved with a 14-year-old girl who screamed. Her parents and other passengers handed over Sundravel to RPF man. Based on the complaint, Sundravel was arrested under POCSO and remanded to judicial custody.

In Thanjavur, a Muslim student who preferred a sexual harassment complaint against six professors alleged that she was being threatened to withdraw the complaint. She said that she has been getting threats to her life.

She alleges that the accused are from her religion and the police officer too. Police are not taking action against them even after a week.
In Krishnagiri district, reports say around an 80-year-old woman was sexually assaulted near Sanamavu forest on December 31 evening. Later, she was admitted to a government hospital.

Marthandam All Women Police arrested a 36-year-old man under the Pocso Act on Saturday, on the charges of rape and sexual assault of a Class 12 girl. When she was waiting for her father to pick her up, a known friend offered her a lift and took her to a home and raped her. Unconfirmed reports show she was sexually assaulted by his friends also.

A 31-year-old convict, M Mohammed Hussain of Adhirampattinam in Thanjavur district, serving a life sentence for a POCSO case on 29th December, threatened a jail warden by attempting suicide in the Central prison in Trichy. He was booked on December 30. He was convicted for multiple offences like house break-in, robbery, criminal intimidation, using a child for pornography and aggravated penetrative sexual assault on a minor girl.

Former Telangana governor and senior BJP leader Tamil Isai Soundararajan told the media, “There is no safety for women in Tamil Nadu. She wanted to know who the ‘sir’, 19 years old Anna University student rape accused Gnanasekaran spoke during the incident. She demanded the arrest of all those involved in the case.
