Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow, stating, “Bharat mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.” His message highlighted the immense impact Dr Singh had on Bharat’s growth and governance.

President Droupadi Murmu, in her message, paid tribute to Dr. Singh’s dual excellence in academia and administration. “Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji was one of those rare politicians who straddled both worlds with equal ease. He will always be remembered for his service to the nation, his unblemished political life, and his utmost humility. His passing is a great loss to all of us,” she remarked.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar described Dr. Singh as the “architect of Bharat’s economic liberalisation in 1991.” Praising his intellect and vision, Dhankhar said, “His profound understanding of the economy, gentle demeanor, and unwavering commitment to Bharat’s progress will forever remain etched in our memory.”

Dr Manmohan Singh’s contributions to Bharat’s development are monumental. As the Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, he spearheaded the landmark economic reforms of 1991, marking the liberalisation of Bharat’s economy. These reforms reduced governmental control, opened Bharat to foreign investments, and spurred unprecedented economic growth.

During his tenure as the 13th Prime Minister of Bharat (2004–2014), Dr. Singh’s government introduced several transformative policies, including:

The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), later known as MGNREGA, which provided employment to millions in rural Bharat.

The Right to Information Act (RTI), which significantly enhanced transparency between the government and the public. He also played a critical role in fostering Bharat’s global economic standing, ensuring that the nation became a significant player in international forums.

Born on September 26, 1932, Dr. Singh rose from modest beginnings to become a global economic leader. He served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985 and held key positions in academia and public administration.

Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after 33 years of service. Known for his intellectual acumen, humility, and integrity, his political career remained unblemished, earning him respect across party lines.
