As the countdown begins for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s highly anticipated visit to Prayagraj and Mahakumbh Nagar on December 13, the region is buzzing with activity, preparing to receive the distinguished guest in grand style. The visit comes as part of the ongoing efforts to review the progress for the upcoming Mahakumbh 2025, a monumental religious and cultural event that attracts millions of devotees from across the world. The Prime Minister is also expected to inaugurate several important projects aimed at improving infrastructure and amenities in the region.
In a bid to ensure that the city and its surroundings are ready for the PM’s visit, a series of extensive beautification projects have been launched. Various government departments have been instructed to give their offices and public spaces a festive makeover, in line with the grandeur of the event. Mahakumbhnagar and Prayagraj are to be adorned with colorful lights and decorative elements, transforming the city into a beacon of celebration.
Key government buildings will be illuminated using façade lighting, while public spaces including parks, roads, and key intersections will be decorated with thematic displays to create a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere. Special attention is being paid to ensure that the city’s infrastructure is both aesthetically pleasing and practical, with a focus on the ease of movement for the millions of visitors expected during the Mahakumbh.
Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, overseeing the preparations, assured that work is proceeding at full speed to complete all necessary projects before the Prime Minister’s visit. “All departments are working in close coordination to ensure that the preparations are finished within the set timeline. The Public Works Department (PWD) is spearheading the renewal of major roads and intersections, while the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) is managing the beautification of key city locations,” Pant stated.
One of the largest and most visible initiatives underway is the illumination of the city’s streets and government buildings, which is expected to create an impressive visual spectacle. The Municipal Corporation has been tasked with installing street lighting that not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides better visibility and security for both residents and visitors. The Electricity Department is working overtime to lay power cables to support this ambitious illumination project, ensuring that everything is in place before the PM’s arrival.
The C&DS department, known for its role in the construction of infrastructure projects, is finalising the installation of decorative gates and structures at strategic locations across the city. These installations are designed to capture the spiritual and cultural significance of the Mahakumbh, which is a focal point for millions of devotees and tourists who will flock to Prayagraj in 2025.
As much as the focus is on beautification, maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability is also a priority for the authorities. Efforts to ensure the purity of the ghats, which are central to the Mahakumbh, are being intensified. Municipal teams are working day and night to clean the riverbanks and surrounding areas, ensuring that the region is pristine for both the Prime Minister’s visit and the upcoming Mahakumbh.
The city’s waste management systems are being upgraded, with additional staff and resources being deployed for this purpose. Special teams are handling the cleaning of public spaces, and a coordinated effort is being made to manage the waste generated by the increasing number of visitors.
On December 7, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will personally visit Prayagraj to review the progress of the preparations. His visit will be a significant part of the pre-visit inspections, ensuring that all necessary arrangements are made well in time. The CM’s visit will include inaugurating vital infrastructure projects, including the Khoya Paya Kendra, which will be set up to aid the identification of lost and found individuals during the Mahakumbh, and public accommodations in Sector 1, which are being developed to cater to the growing needs of visitors.
The Chief Minister will also attend a crucial meeting with organisational officials at the Circuit House to finalise the Prime Minister’s itinerary and ensure smooth coordination between all departments involved in the preparations. “We want to make sure that all necessary arrangements are made well in advance to guarantee the success of both the PM’s visit and the Mahakumbh event. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase the spiritual and cultural heritage of our state to the world,” CM Adityanath said.
His schedule will also include an inspection of critical sites such as the Alopibagh flyover, the Alopibagh Road, and various other infrastructure projects that are designed to accommodate the increasing influx of pilgrims and visitors. The Chief Minister will also inspect the Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (Naini) and the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to ensure that sanitation standards are upheld. Additionally, CM Yogi will assess sites such as Shivalaya Park, a key location for public gatherings, and Arail Bandha Road, which is undergoing a significant upgrade to handle higher traffic volumes during the Mahakumbh.
With such a large influx of visitors expected for both PM Modi’s visit and the Mahakumbh 2025, ensuring smooth traffic flow and safety is another area of focus. The PWD and the Prayagraj Development Authority are working closely to upgrade roads and junctions, improving their capacity to handle the heavy traffic that will be generated by the event. Special efforts are being made to ensure that roads leading to important temples, ghats, and event venues are in top condition.
The Mahakumbh is one of the largest and most sacred religious gatherings in the world, and Prayagraj is expected to receive millions of devotees in 2025.
