The recent move by the Congress-led Karnataka government to cancel BPL (Below Poverty Line) cards of over 10,000 beneficiaries has triggered widespread outrage, especially among the poor and vulnerable sections of society. The BJP has condemned this action, accusing the Congress government of betraying the poor and undermining critical welfare schemes.
According to reports, the government has cancelled several beneficiaries’ BPL cards, resulting in the loss of essential government facilities like Ayushman Bharat, scholarships, CM Relief Fund, and NREGA benefits. These facilities were crucial for those living below the poverty line, and the government’s move has left them in a state of shock and despair.
The move follows a previous decision by the Women’s Development Department, which had cancelled 16,000 cards in the Grilahakshmi Yojana due to GST and IT declarations. With the cancellation of 10,000 more BPL cards under the Annabhagya Yojana, these beneficiaries are left without access to vital services. The government’s actions have exposed its complete disregard for the needs of the poor and marginalised sections of society.
Reacting to the news, BJP leaders have accused the Congress government of playing politics with the lives of the poor. “This is a direct attack on the poor people of Karnataka. By canceling these BPL cards, the Congress government is depriving the most vulnerable sections of society of basic benefits. These are essential services that help people survive in times of crisis,” said BJP spokesperson M Karunakar.
The BJP also accused the Congress of implementing policies without proper planning, resulting in chaos and confusion. “The government claims that the BPL cards were cancelled because of discrepancies like IT returns, but the truth is that they have made arbitrary decisions without any transparency. By doing so, they have placed the poor in a vulnerable position, further exacerbating their hardships,” he added.
The department confirmed that the cancellation was restricted to BPL cards found ineligible. However, the BJP has raised concerns over the suddenness and lack of transparency in the process, with many beneficiaries unaware of the reasons for the cancellation.
The Food Civil Supplies Secretary also stated that the government would revise the cancellation of IT-related BPL cards by Monday. However, this revision does little to address the immediate plight of those whose benefits have already been cut off. “The government is treating the poor as expendable. They announce schemes and then withdraw them without warning. The benefits people depended on for survival are now being snatched away,” said BJP leader M P Appachu Ranjan.
As the controversy unfolds, the BJP has called for immediate action to restore the cancelled cards and ensure that this hasty decision will not further penalise the poor. The party has demanded that the Congress government take full responsibility for the hardship caused to thousands of families and immediately halt the cancellation of BPL cards.
“This is a betrayal of the poor. The Congress government must stop playing games with people’s lives and restore these benefits immediately. They should be focused on supporting the poor, not cutting them off from essential services,” said BJP leader Pralhad Joshi.
The BJP also warned that the Congress government’s actions would not go unnoticed, and the party would continue to expose such harmful policies in the lead-up to the next elections. The cancellation of BPL cards, the BJP argues, is just another example of the Congress government’s failure to serve the people of Karnataka, especially those who need help the most.
Prahlad Joshi has raised serious allegations against the Congress government over the recent cancellation of 10,000 Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards across the state, accusing the government of abandoning the poor and worsening their plight. Union Minister addressing the media in Hubli slammed the state government, accusing them of acting without proper planning and pushing the state towards financial ruin.
The BJP has termed the cancellation of BPL cards as a direct result of the Congress government’s mismanagement and financial instability. “The Congress government is cutting BPL cards because it is bankrupt. This is the harsh reality. The government made grand promises and guarantees without any planning, and now the poor are paying the price,” Joshi said, criticising the government’s lack of foresight and preparedness.
Joshi also pointed out that the Congress government’s guarantees have not been adequately implemented, with several promises being scaled back or unfulfilled. “The Congress government is in a state where it cannot even deliver on its promises. They are having the benefits of the guarantees. The state is in complete bankruptcy, and the Congress leadership has no real solution,” he added.
The Union Minister further accused the Congress of hypocrisy, stating that while the central government has been supporting the poor through schemes such as the distribution of free grains and procurement of crops at Minimum Support Prices (MSP), the state government was cutting the very cards meant to help the disadvantaged.
“Under the Union government, we are providing 5 kg of free grains per person, and we are also buying wheat, paddy, and other agricultural products under the MSP. Yet, the state government is cutting BPL cards, leaving the poor to suffer. This is not acceptable,” Joshi said, urging the government to take immediate action to prevent further harm to the vulnerable sections of society.
The BJP also questioned the Congress government’s intentions, accusing them of focusing more on political gains than on the welfare of the poor. “The Congress is in power, but they are failing the poor. The government must ensure that the benefits reach those who most need them. Instead, they are creating more hardships for the people,” Joshi said.
The controversy surrounding the cancellation of BPL cards has sparked a fresh round of political debate in Karnataka, with the BJP accusing the Congress government of failing to deliver on its promises while the Congress continues to defend its actions in the desperate move.
