Aizawl: A joint team of the Indian Army, Assam Rifles and state police seized a huge cache of ammunition and explosives in Mizoram near the Myanmar border. Security sources said that the seized ammunition and explosives were planned to be sent to the anti-junta rebel forces in Myanmar. The security forces successfully uncovered a significant stockpile of illicit materials late at night on November 6. Acting on reliable intelligence input, security forces formed a joint team to raid the suspected areas in Serchhip-Thenzawl road.
The operation led to the interception of a suspicious vehicle by the team engaged in the area. After thorough scrutiny of the suspicious vehicle, security forces discovered an extensive cache of explosives, comprising 9,600 Gelatin sticks, 9,400 detonators, and approximately 1,800 metres of Cordtex detonating cord. Two individuals of Mizoram were apprehended by the security forces on the spot. They were handed over to the local police. A case has been registered against them for carrying explosives without proper authority. Police sources said that the explosives were transported to the border area to smuggle to Myanmar. In the initial investigation, it has been revealed that the explosives were being smuggled to militant groups in Myanmar. But who are procuring these explosives in India for the Myanmar rebels are now being investigated by the police.
In August of this year, ten accused were chargesheeted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a case involving the seizure of weapons and explosives from Mizoram that was linked to rebel groups located in Myanmar. Each of the ten accused has been charged with actively participating in the trafficking of explosives, weapons, and ammunition along the Indo-Myanmar border.
According to the NIA, the case was filed in May 2022 after a significant amount of explosives, weapons, and ammunition were found in two cars outside Kelsih village in Kulikawn, Aizawl. According to NIA investigations, militants from Myanmar conspired with their allies in Mizoram to acquire weapons to aid militia organisations engaged in armed conflict with the current government in Myanmar. According to an official, they had planned to illegally carry explosives, ammunition, and weapons to groups located in Myanmar by working with Lalrinsanga, a Myanmar national living in Aizawl.
