Maize was the traditional crop of his family.
In 2010, Bharat Bhushan attended a CSIR camp in Jammu, where he learned about lavender farming. Inspired by the experience, he cultivated lavender on two canals of land. Gradually, over a period of six years, Bharat Bhushan developed a nursery for the lavender plants. By 2016, eight to ten other farmers had joined him, and together they cultivated lavender in their fields.
People were astonished to see how, by replacing traditional crops with lavender, his income inceased. This remarkable story of his quadrupled earnings reached the esteemed Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Subsequently, PM then had an online conference with Shri Bharat Bhushan. When Modi Ji asked why other farmers were not growing lavender like him, Bharat Bhushan explained that initially, he had to purchase the plants required for lavender cultivation and set up a small nursery. Eight to ten farmers bought plants from him to grow lavender, but other farmers were unable to start this cultivation due to a lack of funds.
In response, PM Modi urged him to start a mission called “Mission Aroma,” under which they would provide all the necessary farming equipment to the farmers free of charge. He also encouraged Shri Bharat Bhushan to leave his job to fully dedicate himself to this mission. He promised him that he would give his complete time to creating the lavender nursery so that he could provide the plants to the farmers at no cost.
