In a pivotal outcome for Haryana politics, BJP candidate Laxman Singh Yadav secured a decisive victory in the Rewari assembly election, defeating Chiranjeev Rao, the son-in-law of former Chief Minister Lalu Yadav and Congress candidate, by a margin of 28,769 votes. Yadav garnered a total of 83,747 votes, while Rao polled 54,978.
This election marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Rewari, which has seen fluctuating allegiances in recent years. In the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections, Rao had triumphed over BJP’s Sunil Kumar by a narrow margin of just 1,317 votes, achieving a vote share of 27.82 per cent. However, the tables turned in the latest election as the BJP reclaimed its ground.
In analysing the historical context, the BJP had previously held the Rewari seat with Randhir Singh Kapriwas winning in 2014 by a substantial margin of 45,466 votes, reflecting a strong vote share of 52.92 per cent. Meanwhile, the Congress had its share of victories as well; Ajay Singh of INC prevailed in the 2009 elections with a vote share of 40.31 per cent.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini over the party’s victory.
“The victory in Haryana is outcome of immense hardwork of party workers. This is victory of Naddaji and Haryana team, the victory is also that of our humble Chief Minister…. Today in Haryana, the guarantee of development has won over the attempts at lies. The people of Haryana have created new history,” he added.
The BJP won 48 seats in Haryana assembly, getting absolute majority in the 90-member House. The party is poised to form its third successive government in the state.
The Prime Minister said no party has formed government in the state thrice successivley.
