Jammu: In an important political development, National Conference (NC) candidate Irshad Rasool Kar emerged victorious in the Sopore constituency, defeating independent candidate Aijaz Ahmad Guroo by a substantial margin of 26,846 votes. Guroo, whose brother Afzal Guru was convicted in the Parliament attack case and executed in 2013, campaigned on a platform promising to address the foundational issues faced by the residents of Sopore.

Throughout his campaign, Guroo highlighted the region’s struggles, asserting that the challenges faced by the locals reflect broader systemic problems within Jammu and Kashmir. He pledged to advocate for the protection of the Constitution and to focus on pressing concerns, particularly the needs of the underprivileged. Despite not having completed his matriculation, Guroo’s commitment to social issues resonated with segments of the populace.

However, the election was overshadowed by the historical context of Sopore, a constituency that has long been a hotspot for unrest and violence, especially since the early 1990s when terrorism surged. The area, which was once renowned for its flourishing apple orchards, has witnessed a dismal voter turnout in past elections, with rates sinking to a mere 19 percent in 2008 and 30 percent in 2014. The fear and violence prevalent in the region deeply affected electoral participation, particularly among urban residents, where turnout occasionally fell below 5 percent.

Nevertheless, a remarkable change was observed in the recent 2024 parliamentary polls. Voter participation dramatically improved, with an impressive turnout of 45 percent, a striking increase from just 4 percent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This surge illustrates a growing political engagement among the citizens of Sopore, potentially signaling a desire for change and stability in the region.
