PATNA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in coordination with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), arrested NIA Patna Branch DSP and his two agents for accepting an illegal gratification of Rs 20 lakh, officials said on Thursday.
According to officials, the CBI and NIA set a trap after receiving a complaint about corrupt activities by the accused officer.
The CBI had received information that one Rocky Yadav, owner of Ramaiya Construction, was alleging corrupt practices by the NIA Patna Branch Investigating Officer during the course of an NIA investigation against him.
After verifying the inputs and acting promptly in coordination with the NIA, the CBI laid a trap, officials said.
During the operation, the CBI apprehended the accused Investigating Officer, Deputy SP Ajay Pratap Singh, along with his two agents, while they were accepting illegal gratification of Rs 20 lakh from the complainant.
According to the details shared by the CBI, the complainant had approached the sleuths of the agency, alleging that the DSP has been extorting money from him by threatening to fabricate his family in a criminal case and falsely implicating his family for illegally stocking unlicensed assault weapons.
Under pressure from the threats given by the DSP, the complainant agreed to pay a bribe of Rs 2.5 crore as demanded and even provided the initial token money of Rs25 lakh to a middleman. The token money was paid to the middlemen on September 26.
The complainant was summoned by the DSP on October 1 at NIA branch, Patna and was asked to deliver a bribe of Rs 70 lakh upon arriving. He was further instructed to deliver half of the said money on the same day to another middleman, whose contact details was provided on a hand written notes.
The complainant then met with the said middleman and requested for some time for arranging the case, assuring the delivery of money on October 3 at Gaya. He then approached the CBI which laid a plan to nab the accused DSP. Following the arrest of the accused, searches are being conducted in Gaya, Patna and Varanasi.
Notably, a team of NIA raided multiple locations including the premises link to former MLC of JDU, Manorama Devi in Gaya and Kaimur districts of Bihar, seizing a massive cash haul of Rs 4.03 crore, several incriminating documents, digital devices and weapons on September 19.
The raids were conducted in connection with a case linked to revival of outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) in the Magadh zone of Bihar. The NIA took over the probe into the matter in September last year, registering a case against a total of 20 accused. Further investigation into the matter is being carried out.
