Guwahati: In the face of Christian missionary schools exploiting their religious sensibilities for educational purposes, the Hindu community in the Rani area, close to Guwahati, demonstrated courage and solidarity. In addition to issuing a public apology, Carmel Missionary School had to dismiss Manipuri Kuki students who were accused of forcing beef onto their Hindu peers. The administration of Carmel School in Rani, has declared that it has expelled the kids engaged in the claimed incidence of coercive beef feeding. The school management formally issued a notice regretting the incident.

The regrettable incident that happened on September 19, 2024, was the subject of a notice from the principal. Students were allegedly sharing tiffins during the incident. The school, citing the need to respect the plurality of beliefs among the school community, has established a prohibition on bringing non-vegetarian food onto campus in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. Parents and guardians were given the assurance by the principal that similar instances would not recur. After a mass protest following the incident, in a meeting with school authorities the regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Youth Wing—Asom Yuva Parishad, Guwahati City Committee demanded strong punishment against those at fault and requested an apology from the principal. The group also declared tough consequences if the demands were not fulfilled by the school administration.

The school reaffirmed its commitment to upholding an atmosphere that is inclusive and supportive of all students in the official notification.

At the Carmel School in Rani, close to Guwahati, tensions broke out following claims that Manipuri Kuki students were forcing local kids in Class VII to eat beef at tiffin time. The incident allegedly happened on September 19, but parents weren’t made aware of it until 24 September, when they protested in front of the school to voice their displeasure over the insult to their religious beliefs.

By claiming that the principal had threatened the impacted local children in an effort to silence them, the school administration attempted to minimise the severity of the situation. Parents reported the school’s negligence and improper handling of the accusations in their First Information Report (FIR) at the Rani police station following the incident.
