Rise of Leftism and Wokeism: A threat to cultural and traditional values

In recent years, a wave of Leftism and Wokeism has swept through societies globally, including India, raising concerns over the weakening bonds of family and the erosion of time-tested cultural and traditional values

Leftism and Wokeism have made a dangerous intrusion in most of the global societies including the Indian. And this intrusion is marked by weakening bonds of family and dilution of time-tested cultural and traditional values that have held together local and global communities for a long time. This is quite an unfortunate trend and, obviously, doesn’t auger well for the future.

To understand the above phenomena more deeply, it would be necessary to talk about Leftism, of which Wokeism is only a more recent philosophical extension. Leftism is the English equivalent of the Sanskrit term Vampanth which means the opposite path. This opposite path connotes the path diametrically opposed to the right path which is based on tradition and historically held values. It would be noteworthy here that Vampanth too is a philosophy that originated in Bharat.

An ancient philosopher Charavak is credited for propounding this philosophy. This philosophy discounts and dismisses the existence of God, soul, reincarnation and the concept of divine retribution of human karmas. It is outright atheistic. But it influenced many sections of the human community at the time of its origin because it propagated unrestrained and unrestricted freedom. It’s overemphasis on liberty was to the detriment of deep rooted religious and cultural values. But it became popular among some sections of the society of that time, some 2500 years ago. Its defining motto was —‘Eat drink and be merry because you live only once’.

The modern Liberandos and Wokes are the present purveyors of the above said philosophy of Vampanth. It is disconcerting to see their numbers swell every day. They are not enhancing peace and camaraderie in the global society but doing the opposite. Their philosophy is infiltrating the minds of the modern youth and this is a dangerous trend.

Cast a casual look at the lifestyle and behaviour of the modern youth in India or elsewhere. Many or most of the youngsters do not believe in God or are agnostics, sitting on the borderline of belief. Traditional or mainstream religion is anathema to them. They reject familial values and scoff at tradition. They drumbeat on the equality of the sexes, so much so that they extend this equality to gender roles and functions in the society and bringing on the way homosexuals and transgender individuals with attached importance.

There is more to Leftists and Wokes than mentioned above.

They are ego ridden and supercilious. They believe in the correctness of their philosophy and hollowness of all others. They hold themselves to be purveyors, propagators and preservers of truth, which they define in their own unique way. They profess humanism and human values but they want to give them their own unique definitions. They believe themselves to be deeply knowledgeable and enlightened. They harp on egalitarianism. They are inclined to add on to their numbers and expand their fold. They encourage mass protests and mob behaviour. Violence is one key instrument of their functioning—to press home their points and further their agendas. They think they are all knowing—because for them the omniscient divine Creator does not exist. They are a modern breed of Marxists.

At the micro levels of the society, you find the behaviour of youngsters afflicted by Leftism and Wokeism very typical. They disrespect their elders and think their parents are orthodox and foolish. They follow live-in relationships and after marriage and prefer to keep pets at home rather than beget and raise children. They are dog lovers and cat lovers but not really human lovers.

Wokeism is slowly, surreptitiously and surely spreading its tentacles throughout the global society. And this does not portend well for peace and well being of our future generations. The values attached with eternal Dharma (Sanatan) are getting eroded with the winds of Woke-ism gaining momentum. This trend must be stopped. Strands of true knowledge which hold together the vast universe (satya) and immanent laws of the divine Creator running the universe (rit) must be realized, recounted and resurrected. This is our utmost duty as human subjects of the Creator on this abode called earth. We owe it to him to work for peace, progress and prosperity of the generations to come.
