In a landmark development for India’s rail network, Indian Railways has commercially launched its first 20-coach Vande Bharat Express train from Varanasi Junction. The new, larger train, which was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week, aims to significantly improve travel efficiency between the holy city of Varanasi and the national capital, New Delhi.
This upgraded version of the Vande Bharat Express comes as a response to the growing demand for faster and more comfortable travel options on one of India’s most popular routes. Until now, two pairs of 16-coach Vande Bharat trains have been operational on the Varanasi-New Delhi route, frequently running at over 100 per cent capacity, reflecting the high demand from passengers. The introduction of the 20-coach train, which has a capacity of 1,440 passengers, is expected to alleviate the pressure on bookings, reduce waitlists, and provide greater convenience for last-minute travellers.
The latest Vande Bharat Express was developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, marking a significant upgrade from the 16 and 8-coach variants currently in service. Known for its state-of-the-art design and advanced features, the Vande Bharat series has become synonymous with fast, efficient, and modern rail travel in India. The new 20-coach version represents a major step forward in capacity and passenger comfort, reflecting Indian Railways’ continued push to modernize the nation’s rail infrastructure.
The train covers the 771-kilometre journey between Varanasi and New Delhi in just around eight hours, making it the fastest train on this route. It will make key stops at Prayagraj Junction and Kanpur Central, serving passengers in major cities along the way. The train’s operational speed and reduced travel time are expected to enhance connectivity for both religious pilgrims traveling to Varanasi and business commuters heading to New Delhi.
The Northern Railway zone has been tasked with the operation and maintenance of the new train, according to reports from Financial Express. Officials from Northern Railway have expressed optimism that the addition of this larger Vande Bharat train will cater to the increasing demand for premium rail travel and offer passengers a more reliable and efficient service.
The Vande Bharat Express has gained widespread popularity since its introduction, offering passengers a seamless travel experience with amenities such as comfortable reclining seats, automatic doors, Wi-Fi access, and a GPS-based passenger information system. With the 20-coach upgrade, the Vande Bharat continues to set new standards in India’s rail network, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving public transportation.
