Islamists who attacked Assam police raised slogans similar to those used by radicals in Bangladesh: Himanta Biswa Sarma

On September 13, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, said in Guwahati that Islamist encroachers who attacked the Assam police in Sonapur on September 12th raised slogans similar to those used by radicals in Bangladesh when they overthrew Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Islamiat fundamentalists, according to the CM, organised attacks on police at the eviction site on September 12 and incited the encroachers. Everyone carried a weapon in their hands, including women, children, and old people, according to CM Sarma. This is a frightening trend that portends a terrible future for the state, and the attack happened close to the capital city Guwahati.

He added that the encroachers were incited by Congress leaders as well. The eviction went smoothly for the last few days. However, Congressmen’s opposition to the eviction on September 12th morning fueled the mob’s attack on the police. It should be noted that thousands of violent mob attacked the police in Sonapur while Islamists were yelling “Allah Hu Akbar” and “Nara-e-Takbeer”.

According to the Assam DGP, 248 Bighas of government land have been cleared of encroachment during the eviction processes, and 237 unlawfully constructed structures built in the tribal belt by those not authorised to build such structures have been removed. On September 12th, sharp-edged weapons and stones were thrown at government officials, including police officers who were on duty. This prevented them from performing their duties and resulted in serious injuries that could have been fatal. 22 police and government employees including DCP, OC and circle officers have been injured in this, some of them seriously. Following proper process, police also used authorised force in response to these miscreants’ targeted attacks. Thirteen people were hurt in all, and two of them were pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Guwahati Police has been instructed to locate and apprehend all of the criminals responsible for the attack on police and government officials. When it comes to police use of force, the appropriate legal procedures are being observed. The injured government officials and others are receiving the proper care, the DGP added.

It should be mentioned that, on August 12, thousands of Islamist land encroachers attacked police and district administration personnel in the Sonapur area of Assam. Attacked by Muslims of Bangladeshi descent who had unlawfully established by building homes in the tribal belt (property set aside for the use of the tribal population exclusively), 22 police personnel—including women police and circle officers—were injured. In order to subdue the assailants, police had to resort to firing. In the course of the police action, two attackers were killed. The tribal belt territory in Sonapur, 30 kilometres from the capital city of Guwahati, has reportedly been overrun by thousands of individuals of Bangladeshi descent.

Muslims who have a well-thought-out plan are attempting to migrate from Muslim majority districts in an attempt to gain control of the Hindu majority assembly constituencies. The majority of the individuals that attacked the police on September 12th while encroaching on tribal belt land in Sonapur come from the districts of Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri, and Nagaon, which have a Muslim majority. The purpose of the systematic invasion into the tribal belt lands in the Sonapur area, according to the locals, is to increase their voter base in order to gain control of the ST reserve assembly constituency. The police and district administration on 13th September continued the eviction drive as heavy security has been deployed in the area to prevent any organised attack from the Islamist encroachers.
