In light of the deteriorating law and order situation, the Manipur government has ordered the suspension of all internet and mobile data services for five days, starting from 3:00 PM on September 10, 2024. The suspension includes services such as broadband, VPNs, and lease lines across the state. This drastic measure has been taken to prevent the spread of disinformation, hate speech, and provocative content through social media platforms, which could incite further violence and disturb communal harmony.

The government’s order, issued by the Home Department, expressed concern that anti-social elements might misuse platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to circulate inflammatory images, videos, and false information, further intensifying the fragile situation.

“In view of the prevailing law and order situation, and to prevent any loss of life or damage to public/private property, it has become necessary to maintain peace by halting the spread of disinformation and hate messages,” the order stated. The internet suspension will remain in effect until 3:00 PM on September 15, with limited exemptions for government services, which will be allowed on a whitelisted basis.

Authorities have directed all telecom service providers, including Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Jio, and BSNL, to ensure immediate compliance with the suspension order. The government has also appealed to social media companies to monitor and remove posts that could incite violence during this period.

The shutdown comes amidst ongoing violent clashes in the state, which have claimed several lives and caused significant property damage. Protests led by students and civil society organizations have gained momentum in recent days, with demonstrators demanding an end to the violence. A key demand raised by protesters is for the unification of the security command under Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. They argue that placing the unified command directly under the Chief Minister’s authority is essential to restoring peace and controlling the escalating violence. Currently, the command is under the Governor’s purview, which protesters claim has been ineffective in managing the crisis

With tensions continuing to rise, the government has urged the public to maintain calm and avoid spreading rumors, emphasizing that collective efforts are required to stabilise the region.
