CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu is gradually becoming unsafe for unsafe for girls and women in the wake of the increase in the number of violent incidents against them. Before the Thanjavur gang rape incident faded down from the memory of the people, the two recent incidents which were not reported by mainstream media in Tamil Nadu have is a matter of grave concern.

In Chennai, parents of 10-year-old girl who was repeatedly sexually assaulted by her neighbour , were beaten up and forced the withdraw the complaint. This has come as a shocker at a time when rape and brutal murder of RG Kar medical doctor is still burning in West Bengal. The survivor, a class sixth student of a government school alleged to be raped by her neighbour Satish. The girl’s mother who returned from work on August 29 in the evening saw her daughter writhing with pain in the stomach. She immediately took her to a nearby doctor in a private clinic who after examination told her the shocking news that she had been sexually assaulted. The victim was referred to Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where doctor’s said she had been raped repeatedly.  The hospital informed the Anna Nagar police ,who visited the hospital and enquired about the case. Instead of taking action against the accused name by the victim, the Inspector of police Raji asked the mother to bring Aadhaar card and other details to the station and probed the child. The police inspector asked her in threatening tone why she had mentioned the name of Satish.  She told her mother that Satish had threatened her if she revealed this to anyone and he would kill her parents.

The inspector then called the survivor’s parents to police station where they were forced to stay till the early hours next day. The incident came to light on August 29 and the case was registered on August 31st. However, according to media reports, the survivor is yet to get mandatory counselling by a District Child Protection officer or any anyone from the Child Welfare committee.

In her complaint, the mother of the victim said  her daughter had named Satish, a water delivery person as the accused. The child also told that Satish had abused her over a period of seven days and threatened her with severe consequences if she reported it.  The situation flared up further with the release of a video reportedly recorded by an NGO worker.

In the video, the girl’s father, a construction worker claimed that police officers had physically assaulted him and treated him unfairly.According to the reports in the media, the father of the victim said in the video  “They questioned my wife’s behaviour and even threatened to file an FIR against me”.  The video  also showed the minor’s mother alleging that she was assaulted and questioned about her character by the police. Despite the FIR being filed on August 31 2024, Satish has not yet been arrested.

When their parents were made to stay in the station and ill treated at the police station , the survivor stood witness to them in the presence of the accused is shocking.

Clarification:

The posted tweet is factually incorrect.

With respect to the issue tweeted, FIR was registered on 30.08.2024 and the law was set in motion immediately by following the procedures as stipulated in the law.

But the police denied such allegations by issuing a clarification through a tweet on their  X handle saying there was no evidence to support the claims of police brutality and rejected allegations of delays in filing the FIR and procedural mishandling of the case.

In another incident a girl from Thriumarudhur was repeated raped by a gang has also come to light. In the video went viral in social media, the victim said “I am studying in a ITI college and used to visit my native place on weekends. One Silambarasan offered that he would drop me in his bike despite my refused to accept. He repeatedly tortured me to accept his offer.  One day he forcefully took me on his bike to an isolated place where he and his friends sexually assaulted. They called me whenever they wanted by saying they had video of the incident and if I refused they would upload it in social media. So I had to oblige. He bought me tablets to protect from conceiving. They took me to their home and paddy field to stage the crime. He said he was working as car driver for Education Minister Anbil Poyyamozhi and nothing would happen if I approach police. He raped me first in April 13 then onwards he and his friends repeatedly raped me. There are four or five friends were with him and raped me  I did not tell my friends fearing repercussions”. She also said “they ruined my life. Twenty days ago, he bought (tablet) and gave it to me and said we would finish things from here. I will pay you, he said, sir.”

Her mother said in the same video ” Silambarasan had given a false promise that he was in love with her and sexually assaulted her repeatedly”.

A 15-year-old schoolgirl was raped by two men after they spiked her drink with the help a woman at a birthday party in Saligramam in May.  The crime came to light on June 7 last when the girl suffered abdominal pain and told her sister about the assault. On the girl’s family’s complaint, police arrested the woman, Pratisha Akira, who is a junior artist in films, and her friend Somesh, a college student in his twenties. a class 11 student, got acquainted with Pratisha at a coffee shop in Anna nagar and became friends.

Dr. S. Samson Daniel (31), a government doctor , was arrested under the POCSO Act on allegations of sexually assaulting minor girls at a hostel affiliated with a minority run government-aided school in Trichy. His mother, S. Grace Sagayarani (54), who is the headmistress of the school, was also taken into custody for allegedly helping to cover up the offenses.

A 22-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by her friend and his accomplices near her home in Thanjavur. The incident occurred shortly after she had returned to her hometown from Chennai, where she works for a private company. Based on the complaint, three suspects — Kavidasan, Divakar, and Praveen — were arrested on charges of rape, criminal intimidation, and filming the crime on a phone camera. A 17-year-old boy was also detained in connection with the case.

The survivor, along with her brother-in-law and father, went to  the Pappanadu police station, less than a kilometre from her home. The woman officer in charge, Surya, refused to register a case based on the victim’s oral account of the assault, insisting on a written complaint. The officer didn’t bother to examine her wounds or arrange medical care. She was too weak to write down the sequence of incidents, the survivor and her family were puzzled. When they approached all women police station, they were advised go to the local government hospital for a medical examination. At the Government Hospital, Pattukottai, she was asked to wait.  Neither the doctor nor the nurses bothered to examine her despite seeing her unwell and extremely. Inspector Surya was suspended while no disciplinary action was against all women police station which the survivor had approached.

The incident shows how the systemic flaws in the State’s criminal justice system have once again failed a rape victim even after she bravely came forward to file a complaint against her attackers.
