An initial strife between the son of the deceased lady and extended members of his family soon escalated abruptly after around a dozen outsiders tried forcing the former to perform the rituals as per the Christian faith

Surguja: In yet another incident highlighting the growing enmity between the families due to conversion born issues, police have detained around a dozen people after they allegedly intervene in an ongoing altercation between members of a family over performing rituals of a deceased lady in Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh.

According to the media reports, as many as 12 individuals have been booked by police after they allegedly tried pressurising a family to perform the rituals of a deceased lady as per Christianity following a confrontation between the deceased’s son and extended members of his family in Surta village under Ramanujnagar police station limits of Surajpur.

Discord between the family members and son of the deceased lady occurred after the latter decided to perform the rituals of his deceased mother in accordance with the Christian faith only to be opposed by members of his extended family and villagers leading to a heated exchange.

However, the situation deteriorated soon after a group of people barged into the village and started pressurising Kanhaiya Lal to continue performing the rituals of his deceased mother as per the Christian beliefs leading to a strife between the villagers and the outsiders.

A few of the villagers then informed the members of the Hindu outfits about the scuffle who in turn informed the police after arriving on the spot eventually leading to detention of a dozen people. It’s been reported that those detained by the police were making objectional comments against the Sanatan Dharma and were rigid in their approach to carry the ritual as per the Christian faith.

The incident underscores the ramifications of conversion-born issues in the remote regions of Surguja division, a traditional stronghold of the tribal community in Chhattisgarh marred by persistent attempts of illegal conversion.

Separation on religious lines

It is worth mentioning here that this is not the first time that incident linked to a scuffle between the family members over performing of rituals of a deceased has come to the fore from the state and similar cases have keep coming to the light from separate corners of the state on regular intervals highlighting the growing discomfort between families over religious lines.

Notably, the Organiser on July 3 reported  about a similar incident from Errabota village under the Parpa police station limits of Bastar district where a major dispute broke out between the two communities over burial of a Christian lady on a private piece of land within the village limits.

The scuffle between a section of villagers and the family members of the deceased lady who reported to had embraced Christianity prior to her death prompted the latter group to approach the court for allowing the cremation to take place in a private land within the village limits.

However, the same has been opposed aggressively by a section of villagers who were of the opinion that the deceased lady should be cremated outside the village and in a Christian crematorium only. In a memorandum submitted to the authorities the villagers highlighted that the village has no official Christian crematorium and the burial of the lady on a private land is against the established traditions of the tribal community.
