In a case involving allegations of triple talaq and illegal immigration, Rehman Khan, a resident of Pithisar village in Churu district, Rajasthan, was arrested at Delhi Airport on August 12. The arrest followed serious allegations made by his first wife, Farida Bano, who had filed a complaint at the Bhadra police station.

According to reports, Farida Bano accused Khan of dowry harassment and issuing a triple talaq over the phone. She alleged that Khan had betrayed her trust by cheating on her and marrying a Pakistani woman named Mehvish, who she claims entered India illegally. Bano further stated that Khan had issued her a triple talaq during a phone call, leaving her and their two children in distress.

Farida Bano, who resides in Bhadra, Hanumangarh, claimed that she had supported Khan’s business by selling her dowry jewellery. She alleged that Khan used this support to fund his ventures abroad and then abandoned her. She has called for government intervention, expressing concerns that Khan intended to bring Mehvish to India illegally.

Mehvish, who hails from Lahore, Pakistan, was reportedly married to Khan in a second marriage conducted via video call in 2022. She arrived in India on July 25, 2024, on a 45-day tourist visa.

Khan, who had been in Kuwait, was detained by Hanumangarh police upon landing in Jaipur, following a lookout notice issued against him prior to his arrival.

SP Hanumangarh Vikas Sangwan confirmed that the arrest was made based on the complaint filed by Farida Bano. Bano, 29, alleged that Khan’s actions had severely impacted her and their children. Khan’s first marriage to Bano took place in 2011, after which he moved to Kuwait.

In response to the allegations, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Khan’s second marriage and reviewing various documents related to the case. DSP SC-ST Cell Hanumangarh Ranveer Sai confirmed that Khan is being transported back to Churu for further investigation.

“We are scrutinizing the documents and interrogating the accused regarding the allegations of marrying a second woman without divorcing his first wife and seeking dowry from her. Further investigation into the case is ongoing,” said a police officer.

While the court may not be able to mend a broken marriage, it can mandate that a man who has separated from his wife without her consent provide financial support. This essentially means the court can require a man who has abandoned his wife to pay maintenance.

Rehman lives and works in Kuwait while his wife Farida lives in Rajasthan with their two children. Some weeks ago, Rehman gave unilateral talaq to Farida over the phone and married a Pakistani woman, Mehwish

In a significant development, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has announced its intention to contest a recent Supreme Court ruling. The court’s decision requires men married under Sharia law to continue paying maintenance to their wives even after the ‘iddat’ period, a time traditionally observed following divorce or widowhood.

The investigation is focused on determining the legality of Khan’s actions and the implications of his alleged conduct.
