Guwahati: An Assam court sentences a rapist in a POCSO case for 15 years rigorous imprisonment. Rapist Injamamul Haque, 30, has been sentenced to 15 years of severe jail by Special Judge Jaydev Koch of the Kokrajhar Court for the kidnapping and rape of a juvenile girl. This decision is the result of an upsetting event that happened on January 17, 2022. The public prosecutor for the Kokrajhar Court, Manjit Ghosh, claims that Haque enticed the victim, a little girl, away from her house by pretending to take her to tuition. Rather, he kidnapped her and took her to Delhi, where he sexually assaulted her while holding her captive for four days. The Assam police team  finally arrived in the national capital Delhi and  rescued the girl. Later police filed a charge sheet against Haque after an investigation and medical checkup of both accused and victim.

Haque was sentenced to 15 years in jail after the court found him guilty of violating Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court also handed down an additional three months in prison without the need for payment of a fine. Haque was also fined Rs 5,000 and given a five-year harsh prison sentence, with an extra month of incarceration without a punishment, under Section 368 of the Indian Penal Code. The victim’s family expressed satisfaction after the court verdict. Locals in Kokrajhar also welcome the judgement and hope that this type of thorough and conclusive investigation by Assam police will help in reducing crime against women and children.
