NEW DELHI: Madhabi Puri Buch is a prominent figure in India’s financial regulatory landscape. She broke new ground by becoming the first woman to head the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the first full-time member to come from the private sector. Her academic background and career path are deeply rooted in economics, finance, and management. This has positioned her as a significant influence in India’s regulatory environment.

Buch’s journey to becoming SEBI’s first woman chairperson is rooted in a solid academic foundation. She earned a degree in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, followed by an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. Her education laid the groundwork for a successful career in finance, with notable leadership roles at ICICI Bank, where she gained extensive experience in retail and corporate banking.

In 2017, Madhabi Puri Buch broke new ground by becoming the first person from the private sector to join SEBI as a full-time member. Her appointment was welcomed as a chance to bring new ideas to the financial regulatory body. In February 2022, she achieved another milestone by becoming SEBI’s chairperson. Since then, she has worked on making the markets more transparent, protecting investors better, and using technology to improve regulation.

Buch’s personal resilience is underscored by her survival of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, including the siege at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. This harrowing experience is a testament to her strength and determination, qualities that have defined her career.

Why is Madhabi Puri Buch on Hindenburg’s Radar?

Madhabi Puri Buch has recently come under scrutiny due to the Hindenburg Research allegations, which have brought attention to her role as SEBI chief. While the details of these allegations remain complex and are part of broader investigations into financial irregularities and regulatory oversight, Buch’s leadership at SEBI has become a focal point. The allegations are likely to be a temporary challenge in her otherwise distinguished career, but they highlight the high-stakes environment of financial regulation in India.

Madhabi Puri Buch is a trailblazer in the Indian financial regulatory sector, with a career marked by significant firsts. From her academic achievements to her leadership roles, Buch has consistently broken new ground. Her tenure as SEBI chief, coupled with her personal resilience, makes her a compelling figure in the financial world, even as she navigates the challenges posed by recent allegations.
