Guwahati: The decrease of Hindu population in some lower Assam districts is like Bangladesh. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, expressed alarm today on the sharp fall in the Hindu population in Bangladesh and Assam, blaming the trend on substantial demographic shifts over the years. CM Sarma pointed out that when the 2021 census data would be ready for publication, it would provide more thorough insights into the shifting demographics. According to preliminary data, the number of Hindus in these places has significantly decreased as of 2011. The Hindu population has decreased by 9.23 per cent in Assam and by 13.5 per cent in Bangladesh, the CM pointed.
These developments, according to CM Sarma, are indicative of a larger demographic shift. The population of Hindus has been steadily declining since 1951, according to historical data. The percentage of Hindus in Assam fell from 76 per cent in 1951 to 61.47per cent in 2011. In a similar vein, the proportion of Hindus in Bangladesh decreased from 22 per cent in 1951 to 8.5 per cent in 2011. The Chief Minister added that Jharkhand and West Bengal should anticipate such patterns. He voiced worries about how these changes will affect local dynamics and demographics in the area. Addressing the problem of land encroachment that affects the Satra lands and outlining the aggressive steps taken by the government to safeguard these regions that are important to Satra culture and history.
CM Sarma stated that there are growing problems with encroachment on the Satra lands, which are essential to Assam’s cultural legacy. He blamed earlier governments for not doing enough to protect these regions, which made them vulnerable in the first place. These territories would have stayed safe if the previous administration had maintained protection for them. Regretfully, carelessness is to blame for the issues we currently confront, according to Sarma. Under the BJP-led government, a lot of work has been done to support the Satras in the last nine years. With the intention of enhancing their circumstances and protecting their grounds from encroachment, the administration has given these institutions significant financial support. Sarma continued, “Our priorities are infrastructure development, education, and health.” Our ongoing obligations include making sure that our cultural legacy is protected and enhancing the living situations of the impoverished, the cm mentioned.
