Organ Retrieval Banking Organisation (ORBO) which is the nodal facility for deceased organ and tissue donation activities of AIIMS New Delhi organized “Donor felicitation programme” today to pay tribute to organ and tissue donors.

“Every year, we lose a significant number of patients to end-stage organ failure due to non-availability of organs and tissues. We must dispel myths and fears and develop a positive attitude towards organ and tissue donations in society,” said Professor Kaushal Kumar Verma and Head Dermatology and Venereology at AIIMS New Delhi
He also expressed gratitude to the donors and their families for the noble deed of saving so many lives at the time of their grief.

It was an emotional moment for the donor families, transplant recipients and everyone present at the ceremony.

The grandparents of 2.5 yr old who had youngest heart were also present along with several donor families.

“We still miss our little Divyanshi who was declared brain dead, she sustained serious injuries after falling from the third floor of our house. We appeal others who are declared brain dead their families must come forward for this initiative.” said Divyanshi’s kind.

To promote Organ and Tissue Donation, ORBO had conducted mass organ and tissue pledging campaigns and awareness among the general public and medical professionals.

ORBO, in collaboration with the BSF conducted organ and tissue donation pledging campaigns in which a large number of BSF officers and soldiers have pledged to donate their organs and tissues.

ORBO had also organized several competitions and programs such as poster making and pebble painting on Organ and tissue Donation amongst School students to spread awareness and promote organ and tissue donation.

Additionally, ORBO performed a mime for the general public to spread awareness about organ and tissue donation.

Dean (Research), Prof. J.S. Titiyal, AIIMS, New Delhi , Addl. DCP (South) IPS Achin Garg, senior faculty members and officials from different association of AIIMS were also present.

According to Prof Aarti Vij, Head of ORBO “the process of Organ retrieval to transplantation is very extensive. It takes efficient coordination and teamwork between donor families, transplant coordinators, treating physicians, transplant teams, support staff, forensic department, blood bank and laboratory department and Police for the entire sequence of events to be seamless. Apart from these stakeholders, there are many hands that work for this noble cause. Several volunteers, NGOs, Organizations, Media and society at large contributes effectively. I express my heartfelt gratitude to the Donors and Donor families at foremost and to all key players that promote this continuity of life. ORBO maintains an exhaustive Website and E-book in which the stories of these divine souls and brave families are updated regularly so that their legacy lives on”.

“Organ donation is a very strenuous process. During grief counseling, we have to deal with lot of strong emotional reactions of donor family, provide them with psycho-social support with an empathetic attitude. This helps the family to express their feelings and emotions and build confidence and trust in the Transplant coordinator” said Balram who is the Transplant Coordinator at ORBO, AIIMS.
